Jonah Wise and Eliza Bird

From on Sunday, 6 November 2011
Hullo Elizabeth we found mention of Jonah Wise whose wife was Eliza nee Bird, and their arrival in Australia on the ship Sir Robert Sale in 1850
I am also related to Jonah, he is the younger brother of my great great great grandfather and uncle of my great great grandmother Eunice Wise.
The older Jonah was born 1817 and was the brother of John Wise, and John was the father of my great great grandmother Eunice Wise. This older Jonah was the the first of the family to come to Australia, although we believe that a brother or cousin of the husband of Ann Wise, the niece of this Jonah, may have come earlier and written back to Huntingdonshire to tell them all what a marvellous place it was, because Jonah came 1850, his nephew and wife 1853, his sister and brother Eunice and William in 1856, and Jonah (the younger one born in 1843) came from Otago in NZ on 30th March 1864,
From an entry in the web page discussion about men named Jonah Wise, of Huntingdon, UK.
1841 UK Census - HO107 Piece 450 Book 13 Folio 6 page 2 Ellington Huntingdonshire
Address Church Lane
Sarah Sutton, 60, Pauper, Y(born in this county), Jonah Wise, 20, Ag Lab, Y and Thomas Cade, 2, Y
This would appear to be the Jonah Wise who married Eliza Bird in Dec 1/4 1847 Registration District Huntingdon vol 14 page 329.
The marriage took place at Steeple Gidding on 19 October 1847.
Elizabeth a confusion still about this family is the death of Eliza, we have found her burial record as follows
91744 WISE ELIZA 25 Aug 1873 Geelong Eastern Cemetery METO*K***32
but her death record in BMD Victoria is 1876/11730
We have always found the above to be confusing, and comparing with your site and the differences found and mentioned above did not make it any less confusing, can you help us to clarify, not important, but would be nice to know which data is correct

We have two different women named Eliza Wise, the one who died in 1873 is listed as
Eliza Wise nee Allwood 1873 #6976 aged 56, dau of Charlotte Hordor and Henry Allwood, from Somerset UK and not easily found in other Victorian Indexes.
See the notes for Eliza Wise further down, in he section headed Joseph Wise.

Joseph Wise

Mr Jos Wise aged 40 came Nov 1855 on the Lightning with Mrs Wise aged 38

from on Friday, 25 November 2011
Hi Elizajan, Noted your discussion (under Heading Jonah WISE) re Eliza WISE buried in the Geelong Eastern Cemetery METO*K***32 I think I can add some useful information for you. She is daughter of Henry ALLWOOD & Charlotte HORTER, she was b.abt 1817 Mells, Somerset and married Joseph WISE b.abt 1812 Mells Somerset at St Andrew's, Mells Somerset on 25 December 1838. I believe that Joseph and Eliza came to Australia on the 'Lightning' arriving in Australia in November 1855.
From the death record (6976) of Eliza WISE (nee Alwood) she died - 23 Aug 1873 at Clarke Street, Chilwell. Parents : Henry Alwood (Baker) and Charlotte Alwood (nee Horder). In Australia - 18 years. Married - Mells, age 21 to Joseph Wise. No Issue.
(Note that the rest of the Alwood family seem to have used 'double L' for their name - ALLWOOD).
Joseph WISE is the brother of John WISE b.1808 Mells, Somerset who married Mary Voisey b.1813 Oak Hill, Somerset at St Andrew's, Mells, Somerset on 14 June 1830. They came out to Australia on the Statesman which arrived at Port Henry on 14 Sep 1851. Their second son was Francis WISE b.1833 Mells Somerset d. 1878 at St Arnaud. Francis is featured on your site.
About your site - I have found it a great resource - very clearly set out, concise and easy to follow.
I was particulary interested to read about Jonah Wise and his family - I have come across the names of his decendants many times whilst researching the Somerset Wise family and I always wondered who they were and if they were related to John Wise and Mary Voisey folk from Somerset.
-- Cheers, Wendy Webster from Victoria Australia (researching the "Somerset' Wise family )
