South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839 - 1900) Saturday 24 April 1847 RESIDENT MAGISTRVTE'S COURT. Wednesday, 2lst April, 1847.
The matter here became one of account, his Worship holding Mr Stephen bouud by the book which had been put in by him.
Mr Stephen then called William Lowe, labourer, who stated that he had been a yearly tenant from the 16th of September last. Saw the plaintif at Mr Reid's from September to November, shearing, washing, &c. Had never seen the plaintiff in Mr Reid's kitchen at his meals. By Mr James — Believed the plaintiff to have been working job work. If rent were put upon the hut in which he lived, one shilling per week would have been the full value. By Mr Stephen — John Parkhurst, labourer, worked with Barnes as a partner it the fencing, and lived with him. The house was not milt in the Doric or Corinthian order, because it would not ceep out the rain (laughter). The hul in which he lived vas a hole cut out of a bank Mr James — How can you show that it was not in the Doric or Corinthian order? Do you know what these orders are ? Witness — I do not know what the Doric or Corinthian )rder is, all I know is Barnes's hut was plastered with mud [roars of laughter, which having subsided, the examination was concluded with) Witness could either live in the hut or in the hole at the back. By Mr James — Burnes commenced the fencing and left it off. He told witness that Mr Reid was to work the bullocks until the fencing was done. John Parkhurst was recalled and examined by Mr Stephen, but he knew nothing about the post and rail fencing.
