Witherden

From on Mon, 7 Feb 2005
Hello Elizabeth: I came across your webpage the other day while scanning the net for others who are interested in the Witherden name.
I believe your Thomas Witherden, father of Thomas (1830-1885) is the younger brother of my 2Xgreat-grandfather, John Sheppard Witherden, born 15 Oct 1789 in St Peter's parish, Margate, Kent.
Five or six years ago I corresponded with a Mrs. Lavinia Cronin of Whittlesea, Victoria and from that correspondence learned that we are distantly related through Thomas Washington Witherden. I mention only on the off-chance that you have also been in touch with her.
I would like to hear from you to confirm that my assessment of the relationship between the two persons mentioned in the second paragraph above. I would also be interested in learning when Thomas Witherden (1839-1885) left England for Australia and what he did for a living there.
I don't know if you have the following information on his father,Thomas but I will set out what I have:
Thomas Witherden, son of Robert and Sarah (nee Norwood) was born 11 Aug. 1789 in St Peter's parish, Broadstairs, Kent. and died 23 Jan 1869 in Broadstairs. He married Caroline Spratling (born, c. 1800, Sandwich, Kent; died 06 Mar 1884, Broadstairs), at St. Clemens, Sandwich on 31 May 1825.
I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers, Ed

source http://www.daao.org.au/bio/anastasia-withers/biography/ Anastasia Withers b. 1825 Bristol, England, UK seamstress, was born in Bristol, daughter of Mr and Mrs Splain. She married Samuel Edward Withers at London in 1841. When their first child, a girl, was only fifteen months old, they sold their manchester shop and embarked for Victoria, arriving at Melbourne in 1851. A son, Samuel Edward junior, was born that year. The family then travelled to the newly-discovered Sandhurst (Bendigo) gold diggings; Mrs Withers is said to have been the first woman on the fields. They were at Ballarat during the 1853-54 rush which culminated in the great diggersí uprising. With the help of Anne Duke, another minerís wife, and possibly Anastasia Hayes, wife of Peter Lalorís mining mate Timothy Hayes, Anastasia Withers sewed the Southern Cross flag which flew over the Eureka Stockade throughout the famous battle. After the miners were defeated, it was rumoured that the authorities were looking for Anastasia as one of the makers of the rebel flag. The family fled to Ararat, then to Moyston where Samuel set up an orchard which they called Bristol Orchard after Anastasiaís birth-place. Later, at Horsham, they opened a fruit shop which was run by several of their nine children. Anastasia Withers died in 1889, aged sixty-four, predeceased by Samuel in 1883, who died at the same age. Both are buried at Moyston. Emily Matilda Withers

from on Thursday, 19 July 2012
There are two young women, same name -
The first Emely Matilda Withers wed 1871 #3711 to William Isaac Hogan from Bristol,
William Isaac Hogan died at Mansfield in 1897 #2185 aged 47 years (the son of Samuel Hogan & Mary Bracher) and Emily Matilda Hogan (nee Withers) married a second time in 1903 to Charles Austin Elliott.
This Emily Matilda Withersí death is clearly registered in 1934 #4105 as Emily Matilda Elliot daughter of James Withers and Mary Trout. The Emily Matilda Withers who married 1873 #2747 (while our Emilyís husband W I Hogan was still alive) to Peter John McGennan died as Emily Matilda McGennan in 1935 #15091 at Warrnambool aged 81 years. That would make her dob about 1854 also but her parents are given as William & Matilda. And we already have the death in 1934 at Burnley of our Emily Matilda so this highlights the fact there were two women with the same name and each born and died around the same time. One Emily & family lived in the general region of Mansfield and the second Emily & family lived in the general region of Warrnambool.
All this can be checked but you will find there were two Emily Matilda Withers born about 1854 (donít know where the second one was born) and each was born to different parents and each married different men. It needs to be clarified in your records for future accuracy of our family history.
Emily Matilda Withers wed 1873 #2747 to Peter John McGennan from Holyhead, the only one with this surname till 1888, and lived at Warrnambool
