Andrew and Sarah Young

From on 18 July 2014
Andrew Young, wed Agnes Gow, Perthshire, Scotland.
Children: 1. Andrew Young b. 1820, Perthshire, Scotland, d. 25/12/1885, Ballarat, Vic.
2. James Ross Young
The two brothers, Andrew and James Ross Young, wheelwrights, from Perthshire, in Scotland, who came to Australia in the 1850s to seek their fame and fortune on the Goldfields. Oral family history has it, that the two brothers put their savings into buying two blocks of land in the heart of Melbourne, before setting off to walk to Ballarat. By some stroke of carelessness or misfortune, the deeds were lost on the Goldfields, never to be sighted again. Andrew did strike it lucky in another way though, marrying the beautiful English widow Sarah Tysoe, herself the daughter of a wheelwright. After their time at the diggings, the brothers returned to their trade, establishing a wheelwright's business in Skipton Street, Ballarat, before building a Hay and Corn Store, at 287 Main Street (later changed to 201), which supplied both the townspeople and the diggers on the goldfields. The business flourished, and the family became well respected members of the community in Ballarat for several generations, before moving to Melbourne and other parts of Victoria. Andrew died in 1885 at only 49 years of age, while James lived until 84 years of age, dying in 1910.

Subject: The Andrew and Sarah Young Story As promised .....
P.S. I have a photograph of Andrew and Sarah Young (nee Tysoe) and I must say, she was truly beautiful; she looked a bit like Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. My grandmother Elizabeth Allchin (nee Young) inherited her looks: 5"10", blue eyes and black hair - tall for someone born in 1889. She and her youngest sister Doris looked much alike, and were also known as Ballarat beauties in their day. Alas, the gene pool deviated before it got to me - I'm challenged at 5' 4 1/2" these days, and definitely built for life as a Welsh miner. Thanks Dad! Regards, Sandra
