Searching for Megson

Date: Sat, 16 Apr 2011 to , No, you are not confused.
My suspicion, based on other families I have been writing up, is that Elizabeth Callander, the one who married William Megson, was a widow and her first husband was Longman.
We are talking about the 1840s and 1850s, when about half the population could neither read nor write. And for many they were also having to cope with the extreme dislocation moving half way round the world, causes. I wonder why Tasmania was so popular, until I remember the way England has winter snow, and short days, with the sun barely above the horizon all day.
And as well, the English plants grew better in Tasmania, than they do in Sydney.
We have seen that William Megson had a bootmakers business in Launceston - into the 1860s I think I remember.
This suggests a trip to Melbourne

Thanks. I did not have the full names of the husbands for Christina and Ann,.
Might be able to help with Mary Younger:
- She married to William John P. Kendell 1895 Reg. No. 3040. William Kendell was born in Cast. Vic. 1863 Reg. No. 6924, parents: William Kendell and Agnes Thomas.
I have Mary and William having one child - Ester Emilia Kendell born 1903 Reg. No. 11656, Leigh Road, Vic.

From on 6 April 2014
I found your site and belong to the Henry Younger line.
Then we follow -May Younger b. 1960 5th issue of Henry- Looks like May and not Mary on birth cert. #? will have to hunt orig -cant read on screen. (my sloppy scanning - must rectify) Her death cert 1934 #8800 has her dying at 72 yrs - two year discrepancy.
Her marriage to Redmond produced another child Robert John Redmond. He grew up as one of the Allen kids,
May's daughter, Lily told mum that she remembered him going to a dance one night and never came home because he had died.
I can find no record of something like happening, thought it might have hit the newspapers at that time, but nothing. They were good liars in those days- so I wonder what really went on. They were living around Benalla at the time, I believe. Don't know what happened to Redmond Senior.
May then married Joseph Henry Allen, who had previously married Elizabeth Jane Mckenzie and had a family.
They spilt. Joseph took Leonard (the little boy- about 3yrs) and turned up married in Yarrawonga to May Younger.
(May's 1st Child Alice Redmond died aged 7yrs) So, now we have her boy Redmond, his boy Allen and they had 4 kids Lily, Annie, Murray, Alice (known as Elvey).
[Story has it that Elizabeth ran away with a James Dillon on the steamer "the Gem" to Mildura - a tidbit that you might like- just to round the family out- no verification on that though].
Joseph and May carried on till they got old, For some reason he went south- apparently to be with his old family??? not sure really, that is "the story " but he died in Beechworth benevolent asylum.
May went south to live with her daughter Lily- in Seddon, where she died.
I hope the information I have is of some use to you. We are slowly unravelling some of the mystery,
Much of the family - whom I don't know, are confused by the two marriages of Joseph Allen, and unaware of the Redmond marriage. I noted that someone had made a comment on your site, of which I disagreed.
Again story gets in the way of fact- and I may well be contradicted too.
I like to have the docs to verify my facts, the story of places etc, help to pad it out. Unsure why everyone has Mary instead of May. Maybe from a death certificate.?
Cheers Colleen
