They came from Kingston, Cambridgeshire, England. Their Eldest child Jane Elizabeth Mills born 1833 died in 1842, in UK. Robert and Jane has another two children after their arrival, Elizabeth Mills was born 1851 in Campbellfield, Victoria and George Mills born in Campbellfield, Victoria. I have struck a dead end with grandfather Alfred Stone - his birth details and parents are very sketchy.

What we do have is as follows;

He was born around 1884/1885 in Collingwood.
His father is believed to be Alfred Stone (same name)
His marriage certificate to Evelyn Pinder in 1910 states his mother was Margaret Owen/s
There is a family tradition that Alfred was adopted or taken in after his mother died not long after his birth.

After extensive searches of the Vic. Pioneer Index we came across your Alfred Stone Unwin. There is a lot of circumstantial data which suggests that this is possibly the same Alfred Stone we are looking for.

I am a grandson of Albert Unwin b. Jun 29, 1883 at Kyabram Vic, Aust. I do not have a lot on my grandfather, just lots of wonderful memories of a rather happy man. I was at Par’s funeral, but I was only about 19 at the time, now I do not remember even the exact date. I remember us going back to the home at 150 Spring St, Preston, where Par had had an extensive garden of mainly vegetables, but guess what, the garden was bare. Apparently he had known of the cancer within him, but being Par, had said nothing. So at 9.30pm on the Monday evening he had said to Nana, “Get me a ambulance …”. Nana apparently replied, “Albert, what would you want an ambulance for ..” . He died later that night on the operating table at Royal Melbourne Hospital

Nathan Unwin

Nathan Unwin aged 42, his wife Sarah Jane Goodwin aged 39, and children Mary Ann already wed, James 13, Jemima, and Nathan agd 7 came 1849 on the 'Maitland'. They went to work for squatter Arundel Wrighte at Bulleen.
This family is in the FirstFamilies2001 database, thanks to Kenneth Henry Unwin's work on the 24 February, 2000.
Ken discovered that Nathan was born 1807 at Arkesden in Essex, England and died 1892 at Euroke, Victoria Australia. Sarah Jane Goodwin was born 1808 at Clavering, Essex and died 1895 at Greenvale, Victoria, Australia.
With such excellent help, I found Nathan's death 1892 #9352 gave his age as 87 and parents as Jemima Chessem and James Unwin. Sarah's record is 1804 - 1892 #8391 with an age of 88 but her parents are unknown.

I have just read a most fascinating account of the Unwin family, which I believe has been your project. My mother was Ruby Adeline May Bond, youngest child of Sarah Jane Unwin and William Ernest Manasseh Bond.
Sarah Jane Unwin (my grandmother) features in your website as the eldest child of Nathan Unwin Jnr & Jane Unwin (Stanlake). Nathan Jnr is also mentioned in a web site written by a Ken Unwin who mentioned that Nathan Jnr was his great grandfather. I have just discovered that he was my great grandfather also. Ken also mentions that Sarah Jane Unwin married William Ernest Manasseh Bond. I have a copy of my mother’s birth certificate which shows that both William and Sarah Jane were born at Green Vale Victoria.
I remember my grandmother telling me that as a child she was sent to live with her grandmother who I believe would have been Sarah Jane Unwin (Goodwin) who arrived in Australia in 1849 with her husband Nathan Snr and their children. One of their sons, James, appears to have had a daughter Sarah Jane who married William Wilson, so Sarah Jane seems to have been a very popular name in the Unwin family.
The sites I have visited mention that the Unwins and I presume the Bonds, were involved with the Primitive Methodist Church . The connection with the Methodist church continued when my grandparents moved to NSW. They lived the latter years of their lives at Ashfield and Sarah Jane was the organist at the Ashbury Methodist Church . William Ernest died in 1944 and Sarah Jane died in 1953 at the age of 84.
I do hope this might be of interest to you. If you could point me in the right direction to discover more about the Unwins and Bonds I would be most grateful. I would also be interested in contacting Ken Unwin.
