The Newspaper also produced a gem - Melbourne Argus, Tue 29 Dec 1868, Page 5, Column 5, 4th paragraph down, one paragraph among many.
Not son of Thomas and Susan!
A fatal gunshot accident occurred at Sandhurst on Thursday night. A lad named Tom Trebilcock, aged fifteen years, had loaded his gun in preparation for a day's shooting on Christmas Day. He placed the gun close by where he was sleeping, and it seems that in tho course of his sleep he touched it in some way, causing it to explode. The charge passed into his side, and killed him on the spot.
This death got into the paper, and into the Index of death registrations we all now love to search as Tom Trebilcock 1853 - 1868 #8876 aged 15, son of Grace and Richard Trebilcock born in Cornwall

William John Treeby

From on Sun, 27 Apr 2003
I am a decendant of William Treeby and Amelia Preedy. We have a copy of their marriage certificate and Amelia's mother is listed as Amelia, you have her name as Polly. Her father was Frederick, you have it listed as unknown. Also her mother's surname is listed as what looks like Symmonds. This could have been an error in writing it down though.
After the dates of birth or death etc. what are the numbers. If these are certificates, do you know where we can get copies?
>So amazing - the shipping record I found fits with your data. The numbers are a date hash reference, and refer to the Victorian records. Try The Genealogical Society of Victoria for the address and costs.

Phillip John Treffene

Joseph Treffene, 1838 - 1895 #12974 aged 57, son of Maria and Phillip Treffene, died at Dunolly, was husband of Elizabeth Hughes, 1848 - 1912 #5343 aged 66, daughter of Mary and John Hughes, died at Donald. Maria Treffene was born 1865 at Dunolly to Elizabeth Hughes and Joseph Treffene. She is the only child registered to this couple.
William Albert Treffene was indexed as born to Annie Treffene 1888 #19873. When he died in 1952 at Mildura aged 63, his parents were listed as Elizabeth Hughes and Joseph Treffene. This suggests he was reared by his grandparents and possibly knew Annie as a sister.
Phillip John Treffene wed c1902 to Maude Hocking registered two sons, born at Dunolly
2 Children 1. Phillip John Treffene 1903 #10027
2. Cecil Ashford Treffene 1905 #10148

Louise Treffene wed 1896 #4121 at Dunolly to John Smithers Roberts, 1870 at Camden in NSW son of Sarah and John William Roberts
From on Wed, 23 May 2007
Hello Elizabeth
I have just come across your web page with your various families and I see that you have Treffenes in the line. I can add a bit of information to Louise Treffene who married John Smithers Roberts as I have been researching the Roberts line:
John Smithers Roberts was born at Camden in 1870 to William John Roberts & Sarah Jane Smith who wed 1868 #3509. He was the 2nd of 13 children.
John Smithers and Louise had 5 children in NSW:
1. Clarence Smithers 1897, Barmedman
2. Allan Smithers 1899, Barmedman
3. Jack Smithers 1900, Goulburn
4. Lionel Smithers 1904, Goulburn
5. Doreen L Smithers 1911 Waverley.
In 1903 electoral roll John Smithers Roberts was a postman. He died on 14 February 1953, his usual residence was in Brigton-Le-Sands. I don't think I have looked up the Sydney Morning Herald for his death, but that is something I can do.
I have been able to find some marriages and deaths of the children, but not the death of Louise. She was supposed to be alive in 1953.
I hope this has been of some help to you - and if you have anything, or any contact with this line of the family I would be delighted.
Bronwyn Smalley, Townsville
PS John Smithers Roberts came from a long line of convicts - 4 from his father's side and 2 from his mother's side.

Margaret Treffene wed 1901 #32 at Dunolly to William Alonza Hearn,
A possible family reconstruction is Elizabeth Hughes 1848 - 1912, and Joseph Treffene 1838 - 1895, are parents of

2. Annie Treffene 1868
3. Louise Treffene 1871
4. Margaret Treffene 1874
5. Phillip John Treffene 1877
William Albert Treffene wed 1914 #170 to Ethel Droscher [dau of Louisa Marshall and Henry Droscher] 1894 - 1979 aged 85 years.
William and Ethel had 13 children (however I only found 2 death notices, so the missing child appears to have been stillborn, and the death was not registered)
