Joseph THOROGOOD, convict No. 480, left Downs, England, on the 6th October 1829, on board the Bussorah Merchant, which arrived in Hobart, in January 1830.. See Conduct Record and his description is aged 29, Ploughman, of Bedford, assigned to Mr A MaDowell Joseph was sent out for sheep stealing, and sentenced for life. He was assigned on arrival to Archibald McDowall of Bothwell. In 1833, his wife, Mary Ann, nee Asom and 5 children arrived in Hobart on the Frances Charlotte. Two more children were born in Bothwell. Three Troroughgood daughters married convicts.

Elizabeth married George BAKER who was born about 1819 and took part in some minor offences. In 1836, he was charged with stealing wet laundry, and sentenced to 7 years in Hobart Town. The Eden left England on the 22nd of August 1836 and in remarkably good time arrived in Hobart on the 22nd December the same year. George was assigned to a "free settler" of Bothwell. In 1844, he married Elizabeth Thoroughgood. John Baker, the first of their 14 children was born in 1845.
The four convict families, by now, all had Conditional Pardons and George Baker also had a Free Certificate, which meant he could return to England. All the families, however, chose to leave for the Geelong area.

I was interested in your website because of the Thorogood name and particularly Emily who married Henry James Hince as they're my grt grt grandparents.
I have to let you know that Emily is not the daughter of Joseph Thorogood but rather James and Amelia nee Nunn who arrived originally in Perth in 1853 aboard the Sabrina, James died on board before making it to Aust. Emily was born abt 1847 in Great Wilbraham, Cambridge, England. the family moved to Victoria. I have marriage certs as sources. Edmund Stephen Thorp came to Victoria c1854 with Isabella Black and both came to Australia as convicts, and settled at Fryerstown when Amelia was born, then lived at Castlemaine, Daylesford.

John Thurgood

Hello again Elizabeth,
Thank you for the last email and all the sites for me to tap into but... you have the wrong John Thurgood for our line.
John Thurgood Born 1827 in Bishops Stortford
He was the son of Lawrence Thurgood and Rebecca Mountford.
He died 1902 in Stawell.
Cemetery records confirm this. I have also sent for the marriage certificate to see what other info is on it, Now just to make it even more difficult Margaret seems to think they came to S A first before settling in Vic. So as far as the ship he arrived on I'm now back to square one, but I'll keep plugging away have had a bit of help with a lady I know that is keen on finding ancestors.
I have also made contact in Essex with another Thurgood researcher and he found John in 1841 and 1851 census but nothing later

John Thurgood aged 34, a carter from London, was in Meninga, South Australia when he wed in June 1869 to Margaret Cameron aged 21, from Edinburgh, Scotland. They moved to Ballarat West where Rebecca was born, and later to Moyston. In 1886 they decided to have a formal mariage registered as 1886 #1943
