Hello Elizabeth -
I can tell you a little bit about Mary Ann Sarah Walkden - she was marked in my family notes (passed on through the ages) as Anna Walkden who married Ravenscroft Stephen - it is not unusual for the family to be known under a different name to their registered name - I was glad to find your site and find her full name etc as I haven't yet managed to look at the Victoria BDMs
Anna's father was Richard Walkden and her step mother was Mary Sephen Dougan - it is the Dougans I am researching.
According to family notes the entire family came to Melbourne, Australia on the first voyage of the SS Great Britain in 1852.
I can find where Mary and the children came to Australia on that boat but not the Father Richard - and also two children are missing.

The passenger list is as follows
Cecilia Walkden (should be Cecil - married and settled in Nsw) - full name Richard Cecil Walkden Born about 1838 - known as Cecil
Miss Walkden (who I presume is our Mary Ann Sarah) - known to the family as Anna - no idea of birth and was the eldest of the children - a step daughter
Emily Walkden ( who married Reverand Charles Strickland MACKIE and I believe they settled in England) - Full name Emily Mary Walkden - born 1847
George Walkden (who married and settled in Nsw) - full name George King Walkden born 1843
Mrs Walkden (this is Mary )
Frank Walkden (married Mary Ann Beard in 1876 in Vic - maybe you have details of their family - I don't) - His full name is Francis Julius Matthew Walkden born 1840 - known as Frank and according to family records a prosperous settler in Gippsland
Frederick Walkden (married Elizabeth Pearse in 1868 in Vic - maybe you have details of their family - I don't) - His full name is Frederick Dougan Walkden born 1839
John Walkden (Married Emma Stanley- presumeably in Victoria) - his full name is John Venn Walkden born about 1835 and according to family was an explorer who spent time exploring Central Australia
Clarence Walkden (married and settled in Nsw) - full name Clarence Parland Walkden born about 1844
so I have no clue when Richard the father came over - I do have an interesting family story as to why they came over.
There was a child, Agnes Walkden but as I only have her birth details I am assuming she may have died before the voyage.
There was also another child Basil Walkden who was born in 1845 - and died in NSW - so I presume he was on that boat somewhere. Perhaps I missed Basil and Richards names the day I was perusing the list - so I will endeavour to re- check this.

Hope this helps - and if you do have some information on Frank and Fredericks families or even John Venn - I would appreciate it.
Regards Lesley

Elizabeth,
From your web site, I have read details listed for my great grandparents, William Ravenscroft Stephen and Mary Anne Sarah Walkden, together with passengers travelling to Australia on the above ship.
An official publication, "Is yours an SS Great Britain Family" published by the restoration committee of the "Great Britain" is the detailed list of passengers, for ALL voyages to Australia on this ship.
I purchased this when in Bristol, from the SS Great Britain shop, after viewing the actual ship.
The list of Walkden passengers, on the first voyage in 1852 is as follows:-
Basil, Cecil, Clarence, Francis, Frederick, George, John, Emily, Mr. Richard Walkden, Mrs. Walkden, Miss Walkden
My great grandmother, Mary Anne Sarah Walkden, certainly did marry my great grandfather, William Ravenscroft Stephen, shortly after arriving in Melbourne, but I am aware the Stephen family already knew the Dougan family, {Mary Dougan - 2nd wife of Richard Walkden) because of their association in the West Indies.
The Walkden family ALL travelled to Australia together.
I think the above provides the information that Richard Walkden, my great great grandfather, travelled with his 2nd wife, Mary, together with all of his children.
Kind regard,
Dorothy Wettenhall.

Thomas Stephenson

Thomas Stephenson aged 29 came Sep 1852 on the Tippoo Saib - too old to be the correct person.

Thomas Stephenson c1831 from Paisley (see letter from David), wed 9 Aug 1853 to Rosanna Mahony, lived at Sandhurst, and became parents of 15 children. See them at David's site. He reports that Rosannah, born about 1833/1835 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, immigrated 30 Aug 1852 - 19 Dec 1852 to Port Philip From Greenock as a Stowaway on the Ship Courier.

From on Wed, 12 Feb 2003 and 26 Jan 2009
I was idly surfing the Internet today and I came across your web-site in which you have claimed Thomas and Rosanna's eldest son Thomas to be the husband of Mary Ann Parish.

I am sorry but I must tell you that this cannot be right because young Thomas drowned in a water hole at Back Creek (Bendigo) on 18 Mar 1856. My primary source is a copy of findings of a Coroner's Inquest that was held the following day. Also you can find this death (ref 1856 / 1641) on the Victorian CDM CD.

If you are interested, more details of Thomas and Rosanna can be found on my web-site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~warncken/everyone/index.htm

I have purchased the birth certificates of many of Thomas and Roseannah's children and on each of these Thomas provided an age that suggested that he was born c.1831. His birthplace as shown on the all of the certificates that I have was Paisley.
