She wrote "We think these may be portraits of Maria & Ansell Spier. They have been enlarged from a photo taken in the dining room of my grandparent's house".
The antique eye glasses give him an unusual image.
Some of the ancestors were Jewish - is the hat also helpful evidence?

I have turned up your web site. I am descended from Julia Spier a sister of William Henry Spier. Their parents were Ansell and Maria Spier.
2 brothers wed sisters - Henry Herschell Emanuel wed Julia and her sister Eleanor married Michael Emanuel [Michael and Eleanor were each the elder] in Manchester on the same day, Jan-March 1864. There was another sister Leah who married Jan-Mar 1861 to Ferdinand Rosenberg and another brother Samuel who married and had descendants.

Page 35 of "The Making of Manchester Jewry, 1740-1875" By Bill Williams, has the note "During 1823 shops were acquired in the Old Town ... and typical of other German immigrants were ... the partners Ansell Spier and Samuel Leon (1823) furriers and manufacturers of cloth caps in Crown Square, Salford." Ansell Spier died Oct-Dec 1862, in Manchester, are these his children - son Frederick Abraham Spier Apr-June 1840, daughters Leah Spier Oct-Dec 1838, Ellen Spier Oct-Dec 1841 and Julia Spier Apr-June 1843.

If you want any more information on the Spiers, I have a number of notes. I am descended from Henry & Julia Emanuel.
