John Wilkes Simmons

The Mercury (Hobart, Tas. : 1860 - 1954) Saturday 1 April 1882 has 1 and a half columns describing the ministry of REV. J. W. SIMMONS.
John Wilkes Simmons, the subject of this notice, was born in Birmingham about half a century ago. Coming of a family which, both on the paternal and maternal side, had for long been linked with the Independent branch of Nonconformity, his connection with Congreg&tionalism has been the natural sequence of family tradition and training. He is an Independent "as to the manner born." It is said that the genius or mental incapacity, as the case may be, of the maternal stock is more frequently inherited than are the mental characteristics on the paternal sida. Observation finds much to support the theory, in all ranks of intellectual ability ; and instance upon instance might be adduced. Matthew Wilks, the celebrated minister of the Tabernacle, Moorfields, was, on the mother's side, greatuncle to the present pastor of the Congregational Church, in Bathurst-street, Hobart, and those who have read the reported pulpit utterances of the former, and the Sunday afternoon lectures of the latter, may have been struck with what may be termed "family likeness" in the style of speech and daring originality of treatment by each. Matthew Wilks, after a tramp along a dusty road, gave out his text in the following style : " I am a dusty man, came a dusty journey, and I will take a dusty subject 'My soul cleaveth unto the dust; quicken Thou me according to Thy word.'" A grand sermon he would preach on that same text.
John Wilkes Simmons was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and subsequently passed through the curriculum at Bedford Theological College. Entering the Congregational ministry in 1856, he received charge of the Congregational Church at Olney, Buckinghamshire, so famed as the retreat of the unfortunate poet Cowper. Here Mr. Simmons spent five years, at the end of which period be came out to this colony. He commenced his ministerial work in Hobart by holding regular Sunday evening service and a Sunday school in a large room in Bathunit-street, now converted into the People's Hall

The Mercury, Hobart, Tas. Saturday 23 September 1882 and in The Argus, Melbourne, Vic. Thursday 28 September 1882 - SIMMONS - BRADNEY.—On September 20, at the Congregational Church, Beechworth, Victoria, by the father of the bride, assisted by the father of the bridegroom and the Rev. The Chapel doors were opened at a quarter past 11 o'clock, when the scho .Is began to arrive, a regulation being made that no adults should be admittid until the scholars ,had boen properly seated, under the superintendence of a Committeo appointed for the purpose. Hymns printed for the occasion w. re sung by the children, Mr. Sandford Scott, leader, and abldy presiding at the harmonium.
