William Shuttlewood

William Shuttleworth aged 22 came Dec 1852 on the James T Foord with Elizabeth aged 18 and an Infant. This family does not appear to be in Victorian records.

From on Monday, 24 January, 2011

Dear Elizabeth,
I have been trying to clear up an error in research regarding William and Elizabeth Shuttleworth and their infant, shown on your wonderful site Australian Pioneer Families.
That family does not appear in Victorian records for the following reason:-
Although the James T Foord shipping list dated 22/12/1852, does show that the surname was indeed SHUTTLEWORTH, in fact, the details of the family listed, were actually those of a family named ShuttleWOOD. All the details attached to them (under the name ShuttleWORTH) on the ship’s disembarkation list at Geelong, are of members of part of my husband’s family. We suspect that the shipping clerk at the time of the arrival must have made the error. Bearing in mind that the accents of many passengers would have been quite strong & therefore easy for the busy clerk to misinterpret.

We have a detailed tree of this family, a copy of which was given to me in 1968 by an elderly grandson of the Elizabeth ShuttleWOOD (nee Bevins born 1834) in this story. She used to relate to the said grandson, Max Watkin, tales of her life in Leicestershire, her marriage to William, the blacksmith, in 1852 in the church of St Mary, Leicester, their voyage to Australia and the birth of her daughter (on board). That infant was named Emily Emma, the first of their seven children. Elizabeth also told of their times at the gold diggings at Steiglitz and later at Firey Creek, Beaufort. William died in 1864 at Yam Hole creek, near Beaufort , Victoria .

Elizabeth, the widow of William ShuttleWOOD, remarried at Beaufort in 1869 to a widower William Edward Nickols, grandfather of our source of information. This Elizabeth died in 1918 age 84. Her second husband, W.E.Nickols died 1906. They are both buried at Beaufort .
Sorry this is a bit drawn out, but it may assist someone in your SHUTTLEWORTH tree to understand why they have been unable to find the link in the Victorian records. It’s all so time consuming, frustrating & expensive to track some things down. Hope this information is of help. Let me know if anyone needs more information.
All the best, Margot Fletcher

I believe the William Shuttleworth in your tree is from Lincolnshire & married an Eliza Sharpley December 1845. at Louth, Lincolnshire (Per BMD’s UK )

and on Monday, 24 January, 2011
The Shuttlewood research you have amassed is amazing and so well put together.
MY list of the 7 births of the children of William and Elizabeth Shuttlewood,( with the exception of their first born), found in Victorian Pioneers Register 1837-1888 (microfiche) some years ago, is as follows:-
1. Emily Emma Born 1852 at sea on James T Foord en route from Liverpool to Geelong Victoria.
2 John James b. 1854 at Iris. ( perhaps a Victorian gold digging site at the time! )
3 James b. 1856/9078 at Steiglitz.
4 George b. 1858/20660 at Avoca.
5 Charles b. 1860 at Ampitheatre.
6 William b. 1862 at Moonamble .
7 Walter b. 1864 at Raglan.
Elizabeth was born in 1834 at Rothley, Leicester . England , as were both her parents James & Martha Bevins ( nee Langham ).
Thus it seems that some other errors have crept into the system (transcription??) It would be a miracle if there were none, wouldn’t it?
Speaking of miracles, what incredible family planning seems to have been achieved by William & Elizabeth.!!!!!
The only children from the second marriage were 5 girls the first two of whom died in infancy. Of the remaining three, two were wed. One, Elizabeth was the mother of the Max Watkin of “ Belmont ” Raglan, who was our family source, as he knew Elizabeth, his grandmother. The second was Martha (Mrs Fred Wilson), who was my husband Robin’s grandmother.
By all means put any info regarding Shuttlewoods into your Shuttleworth history. Hopefully other later researchers may be saved the trouble of trying to find an answer to the puzzle.

Thankyou Robin, for your wonderful letter.
And the infant born at Sea, is Emma, who wed 1873 #3276 to John Slater
