Dear Elizabeth
I have recently been directed to the Pioneer Families website  http://mepnab.netau.net/s/s14.html - this is a marvelous resource, thank you.
My connection is this:
Jane Sarah Bell arrived April 1853, aged 13, on the James L Bogert with her family - Father and Mother Thomas and Emma Bell and a number of brothers and sisters as outlined on your page. They settled in Elphinstone, VIC.
Hiram Slocum arrived Nov 1853 on the Helena from New York.
Hiram Slocum and Jane Bell married in 1861 and lived their lives in and around Graytown, VIC.
Jane's sister Hannah Emma Bell (known as Annie) married my maternal Gt Gt Grand Father, George Bailey in 1855 in Taradale. They had children and moved to NZ to the Otago gold fields in 1862.
Annie died in Lawrence, Otago in 1866 - we think in child birth.
George Bailey ultimately settled in Invercargill, NZ where he was a Chemist    I have more to add if there was a place to upload or send it.
Thank you again for the website.  Kind regards Roger

See the FirstFamilies2001 page by Noelene Young on the 14 August, 2000, for Hiram Slocum,
Hiram Slocum was an eighth generation American. His ancestors were Quakers who first settled Rhode Island, USA, prior to 1637. He was descended from the poet Dryden's family and from a 17th century Colonial Governor of Rhode Island, John Wanton. He came alone to Victoria from New York State in 1853 at the age of 22. After a year on the goldfields he was employed by Cobb & Co. as a "Yankee coach driver" and later as their manager for 19 years. He had the reputation of being one of the best whips on the road, and for the first seven years he drove the night coach carrying mail and passengers between Melbourne and Ballarat, leaving Melbourne at 6 p.m. and arriving Ballarat at 6 a.m. He was several times held up by bushrangers, once by Dan Morgan. In 1868 he drove Queen Victoria's son, the Duke of Edinburgh, from Ballarat to Castlemaine in a coach with 6 horses. In 1860 he was resident at Creswick, Victoria, where he and Jane resided at the time of their marriage. In 1868 they were living at Castlemaine. From 1869 until his death he lived at Graytown, Victoria, as licensee of the Slocum Bendigo Hotel from which he also conducted a store and followed pastoral pursuits. He was for many years a judge of the horse classes at Victorian country shows.

Hiram Slocum wed 1861 #2553 to Jane Sarah Bell 1839 - 1879 #7951 aged 39, died giving birth to her 10th child. Both Jane and Hiram are buried in the Graytown cemetery, their headstone being one of the very few that were able to be restored by a volunteer historical group.
