William Slaughter

From on Monday, 16 March, 2009

Hi Elizabeth,
I have just discovered today that my husband's g g grandmother was Elizabeth Mary Slaughter and I wonder if she is the sister of Frederick who married Emily Susannah Holdsworth. Elizabeth's daughter Annie Elizabeth was born in Melbourne and came to NZ aged about 19 years. I have found some common names in the descendants, including my husband's great uncle named Ferdinand (? named after his great uncle Ferdinand Schlesinger who was married to Esther Slaughter - not really a common name).
Do you know anything of the rest of the Slaughter family?
Thankyou and regards, Margaret

Dear Elizabeth,
I think the brother who preceded Susanna was the Richard Sleeman that you have arriving in 1852 with Mary (presumably his wife?)
I see the brother and sister in 1851 in Plymouth. Susannah is Head of the household , 29 a Bread Baker. Richard her brother is 30 and a Journeyman Baker, both born Devonport. There is also a little girl aged 3 with them - Maria G. Hawkings, niece, bn Devonport. She must have just been visiting as in 1861 she is back at home with the Hawkings family in Devonport. They are also Bakers. Susannah sounds a very capable lady and well able to look after herself!! Many thanks for your reply, Yours, Lyn

I am researching the Budge family. Samuel Budge married Catherine Sloane 1871 at Williamstown. They came to Queensland where I have them with Mary, James and Samuel. I haven't touched this research for a long time so will hopefully be able to help you a little after I have gone back over my notes.

Thank you for your site: My husband’s grandfather Arthur Ainsworth Sloane was born to Peter Francis and Mary Ellen Sloane (nee Stafford) in 1890. We had often wondered where the name “Ainsworth” came from and can now see Alice Stafford had married a William Ainsworth who died in 1884.
Peter and Mary Ellen lived in Charters Towers Queensland and Arthur was their 8th child. He was 12 when his mother died. Arthur worked in the Post Office and then enlisted and went to Gallipoli. Fortunately he was wounded and was hospitalized in Cambridge England where he met his wife Violet. They returned to Queensland and had 5 sons. Three of their sons went to War and all three returned. Jack (my husband’s father) was a prisoner of war of the Japanese and worked at Hellfire Pass on the Burma Railway.
Thank you again. Regards Elizabeth Sloane
