Hello Elizabeth
Re your Australian Pioneer Families page and the item on the Skewes families.
Of the two families who arrived on the David G Fleming, I believe that Mary belonged to Jane Skewes, not to Richard.
Jane arrived with 5 children, which did not include Elizabeth Jane (aged 15). Jane's Elizabeth Jane was already 18 in the 1851 census.
On a general note, I think that your web-site is an incredible achievement.
Regards, Alan

Joel Skipworth - 4 wives

Joel Skipworth from Lincolnshire, (a Researcher found birth 24/10/1831, probably Halton Holgate), wed 22 July 1876 #3192 to Sarah Tolmie nee Cranwell (a 3rd marriage for each) and lived at Footscray where 2 daughters were born, then he had a registered wedding in Sydney 1881 No1809 to Mary MacNamara.
From a Rootsweb - Joel Skipworths father was Augustus Frederick Skipworth 24/1/1804-1/1/1881 arived in Adelaide on 11 March 1840 on the ship Baboo
From SA Colonists - SKIPWORTH Augustus Frederick, Maria JOHNSON, John, Joel, Amos, Augustus Fdk, Thos, Hrt (d@sea) arrived 1840-03-10 on Baboo from Liverpool 1839-11-24
See the story of Ellen Washington first wife of Joel Skipworth, by Andrew Warland.
Joel SKIPWORTH - 1st marriage to Martha Ann WASHINGTON, Christ Church North Adelaide, South Australia 28/6/1852. Children known Alice b 3/12/1859, Alfred b 1862, Joel b 25/4/1853, Maria 12/5/1854, Frederick James b March 1856 (?26/2) and John b 31/1/1858
William Washington (born 1812 in England, died at Hilton, Adelaide in 1883), his wife Ann (nee Bahnforth or Balmforth), and four children George, William, Mary and a young child (possibly named Thomas, based on his marriage details, see below), arrived on the barque Westminster on 5 July 1848, as reported in the South Australian Register of 8 July 1848 (the names of the children were not given, just 'four children')
Selina Washington married Thomas Balfort on 19 September 1850 in South Australia. Her sister Martha Washington married Joel Skipworth (born 24 October 1831 in Lincolnshire, England) on 28 June 1852 at Christ Church North Adelaide, South Australia.
Joel Skipworth, born 25 April 1853 at Salisbury, South Australia
Maria Skipworth, born 12 May 1854 at Salisbury, died 1856 (aged 2)
Frederick Skipworth, born 26 February 1856 at Peachy Belt MPW South Australia, died 21 May 1902 at Wallaroo, South Australia
John Skipworth, born 31 January 1858 at Stockport (north of Adelaide)
Joel had an affair with his sister in law Ellen who was aged 17, and Ellen gave birth, on 4 August 1858, to Jane Washington and her difficulties continued Ellen gave birth to a son she named William Washington n 21 December 1861, at Reedbeds, South Australia who died 20 January 1863 aged 1 year at Dry Creek.

Sometime after the birth of John Skipworth in 1858, and possibly because of Joel's affair with Martha's sister Ellen, the family moved to Kyneton in Victoria. Their infant son John died on 7 February 1859 at Kyneton, aged one. Martha and Joel then had two more children:
Alice Skipworth, born on 03 December 1859 in Kyneton. Alice died on 1 December 1938 at Rosewater South Australia
Alfred Skipworth, born 1862, died 1863, aged one.

There is a 10 year gap - Joel Skipworth leaves Victoria and goes to New Zealand - Joel left Martha and family in Kyneton sometime after the death of Alfred in 1863. He never divorced Martha. He moved to New Zealand and, in 1865, married an Emma Bingham in Christchurch and had two sons by her. However, the law court up with him in New Zealand and, on 24 November 1862, the Ontago Police Gazette issued a note stating that Joel, who had been spotted in the Canterbury area, was subject to a Victorian Apprehension Order for deserting his wife and children in Kyneton. It also states that Joel was known by the name of Joel Johnson at the time. He was described as being 5' 11", with thick, straight, dark brown hair.
3nd marriage 22/7/1876 to widow Sarah Ann TOLMIE (nee Cranwell) at The Manse, Footscray Victoria.
Joel Skipworth 3rd marriage in Sydney 1881 No1809 to Mary MacNamara.
These deaths are registered in New South Wales as number 11205/1902 Skipworth Mary dau of Michael and Mary died at St Leonards 1656/1911 Skipworth Joel son of Augustus and Mary died at Granville - Joel died 4 Mar 1911, aged 80 at the Rookwood Asylum.

Joel Skipworth 1831 wed 28 Jun 1852 to Martha Ann Washington 1833 in Adelaide South Australia.
They had a son Frederick James Skipworth who married Sarah Parsons Laming in Adelaide 22 Mar 1882. Sarah had a sister Harriett Laming who married John Henry Matthews and this line (Matthews) from Redruth Cornwall is the Author's thread.

From on Thu, 15 Aug 2002

I do have the marriage certificate for John Slattery and Mary Winifred Brown, as per your reference. And I now see it is also from the VIC Pioneers Index 1837-1888. It tells me the following:

Married 4th May 1880 at St Kilian's Church, Sandhurst (now Bendigo). Both from Ireland. He was 30, she was 31. His father was Daniel Slattery, farmer, mother Hannah Toohey. Her father was Michael Brown, farmer, mother Mary P?????. Bridget Jane Brown was a witness (sister?).

From other certificates:

Edward James Slattery was born 31 August 1889, Sandhurst. Died 16 October 1925, Bendigo. Married Martha Alice Knight 2 October 1907, Bendigo. At the time of death, his issue were Mary Alice (dead), Dorothy May (16), Edward John Lyall (14), Robert (12 - my line), Thomas (10), Henry William (3), Vincent (1).

I have no other information pertaining to the above, except a direct trace from Robert Slattery. Hope this information is useful. Yours certainly was interesting, although I'm not so sure what to do with it! I guess I will be looking to find out more about that ship!

I can tell you that an additional Edward James Slattery was born to John and Mary Winifred in 1889 (died 1925 in Bendigo), the previous issue being John Daniel (7 years), Edward James (dead), Mary Winifred (4 years). I learn from your site there was also another deceased infant, Bartholemew. It is from Edward James that I am a descendant.

Interesting to note you have John Slattery listed as an early pioneer. Can you please explain the term, how he came to be known to you as a pioneer, and how generally a 'pioneer' might have found his way to Australia (any ideas of ship, timing,...?). All I can ascertain is he was born around 1850 in Tipperary and married in 1880 in Sandhurst. Too young to be a convict and perhaps too young to have arrived here as a result of famine in Ireland... unless accompanied by family? His father is Daniel Slattery. It appears his father was a farmer in Ireland.

John Patrick Slattery

John Patrick Slattery wed 1889 #782 to Johanna Myer 1857 - 1917 #495 said to be born at Sandhurst, died at Brunswick aged 60, daughter of Mattias Maher and Mary McGrath, whom I could not find in the Victorian Indexes of Births or Deaths
3 children 1. Patrick John Slattery 1890 #12344 - 1962, born in Echuca
2. Mary Muriel Slattery 1892
3. William Slattery 1896

1. Patrick John Slattery 1890 - 1962 wed Margaret McDonnell, 1892 - 1963
1. William John Slattery 4 Sept 1913 wed Sophia Alice Bravo
