Richard Scadden

From First Family 2001 entry by CARA COX on the 7 June, 2001. Richard Scaddan (1835-1896) and his wife Jane Smitheram (1834-1913) were both born in Gwinear, Cornwall. Richard's mother Loveday Jones Scaddan had died in 1853 when he was eighteen years old. But when he later married and started his own family, he and Jane decided to migrate to New Zealand in 1863. It would seem that the older brothers would have discussed this move as all four of them were in Australia by 1866. A younger brother, Phillip, was born in 1840, but nothing further is known of him. They first migrated to New Zealand, but by 1866 when three of his brothers were already in Victoria, Australia, he and wife Jane, together with their three sons, sailed for Melbourne. They went to live in the Bendigo area at Eaglehawk. They joined Richard's three brothers William Henry (1834-1898), his wife Carolone Noble and their children, James (1837-1903), who later married Catherine O'Connor in Bendigo, and youngest brother and batchelor Joseph. Joseph married Sarah Cleave (Cleeve) in Bendigo about 1868.

Dear Elizabeth, Thankyou for your web site I am addicted and I now have a short cut on my desk top!! James Scales has been very difficult to trace I was so surprised to see the name on your site. Mary Anne was born in Tarnagulla in 1862 to James Scales from Derry Ireland and Marys name has been different in almost every birth certificate. Mary Ann it is spelt Anderin it took me awhile to relise it was Handrahan Mary was from Tipperary.I have been unable to find a marriage certificate as they state on the birth certificate of Mary Ann that they married Christmas day 1861 in Dunolly.
Mary Ann married Thomas Pearson in 1888 in Ravenswood at the home of the bride certificate number 6661.Thomas was the son of William Pearson from Cambridgeshire who married Sarah Goodson his second wife and brought her to Australia with his 6 children in 1855 they lived in Williamstown. Thomas was born in 1856 he was born at long gully as they had left Williamstown to go mining.Sarah died in 1861 and is buried at Campbells creek, leaving Thomas with William but William went back to Williamstown.I have not been able to find out who looked after Thomas.
Thomas and Mary Anns children were born Kangaroo Flat, James born 1890, William born 1891 (William was the writer's grandfather), Mary, Isabella, Thomas, Leslie, Nellie, Esther born 1906,
