Country News. [By Electric Telegraph.] (From Our Own Correspondents.) Geelong, Sunday.
A fatal accident occurred in Malop street last Saturday night. There was a performance on a wire rope, a joung man named James Alexander, and a boy named Henry Alfred Ruflin, aged 12 years, being the performers. They walked from opposite sides of the road, and having reached the middle of the rope both knelt down and shook hands Young Ruflin got frightened when about to return and fell from a height of 27ft. to the metal led road below. His right thigh was broken, and the right side of his skull fractured He lingered in the hospital insensible until a quarter to 5 this morning, when he died The boy's father and about 1,500 persons witnessed the shocking occurrence.
The Inquest was told - 'The father of the boy, who stated that he had been a professed trapezist, deposed that he had been training his son as a trapezist since he was able to walk, and had placed him under Mr Alexander two months ago to perform with him. He gave him leave to perform with Alexander on Saturday night. He was not timid or nervous, but eager to go.
The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, adding a rider to the effect that proper precautions had not been taken, and that such performances should not be allowed in future without mattresses or netting underneath the rope.
