Elizabeth
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I can tell you that James Routlson died in 1917 was buried on 12 July 1917 in Wedderburn Cemetery, Wesley section.
Catherine survived him and died in Richmond, Victoria, in 1922. She was initially interred in Foostcray Cemetery and two years later was buried with her son in Fawkner Cemetery. I haven't looked up the BDM registration numbers.
Do you know anything further about their lives? I know a little bit that might be of interest to you. For example James filed for a divorce in 1861 (File No. 1861-84/33) but while he was given a legal separation he was not denied permission to marry anyone else. Whereas Catherine had left James in 1855 and had "married" another man Frederick Owen Jones, June 27, 1860 in Inglewood (Reg. No. 1860-2084). This was apparently a long term relationship that was the reason for the breakdown in Catherine's marriage to James. However the court forbad her too from other marriages. It was shortly after this that James and Catherine got back together and started their family.
I have researched the Crow family from Ireland and their immigration to Australia. I am descended from Catherine's sister, Mary Ann Steen.
I have written up what I do know about the Crow family if that is of any interest to you. I am keen to find out more about Catherine and James Roulston.

Horace Rowcroft

Researched in response to the email request.

From on Sunday, 26 September, 2010,
Dear Madam, My name is David Perrin – I am a researcher for the Archives at Ballarat Grammar School. I am researching ALFRED BERNARD ROWCROFT (b1907). He was a very early student at Ballarat Grammar and a student under our first Headmaster Dr Robin. He seems to be the son of Mrs E M ROWCROFT. I believe she was the post mistress at Irymple and then Ultimo. I have just seen the St Lukes website and I believe Mrs Rowcroft donated some land for St Lukes to be built on in 1930. I am wondering if you let me any information regarding Alfred or the Rowcroft family if you know any at all. I have only just started investigating Alfred and don’t have much – so anything would be most welcome. I think Alfred may have passed away in 1961? But I am not sure. By all means if you know anything regarding this family some direction would be most welcome. We are putting together a biographical registry of the early students. Hoping you can help. Thanks and all the best! David Perrin
Looks like he joined RAF 2 July 1925 for 12 years, got 2 extensions and in first 12 years grew extra 2 inches tall Looks like he survived, discharged 1948 and claim for Pension rejected.
Now I am getting to his grandparents and outside your time span
Alfred Peel Rowcroft born in Tasmania, 1874 to Isabella Bennett
Father Alfred Peel Rowcroft born in Tasmania 1843 - Longford,Tasmania, son of Stammers, Mary Ann Catherine wed 1831 - Hobart,Tasmania to Rowcroft, Horace .
Two deaths in Victoria, Horatio Nelson Rowcroft 1878 aged 72 and Mary Ann Catherine Rowcroft nee Odonahoo 1879 aged 72
Family were early residents of Mildura - when Annie Oriana was born 1893
and the final "Icing on the Rowcroft cake" - a Rootsweb entry dated 2000 - My name is Kaye Soulsby and I am researching the following families in Geelong approx 1850 onward.
My 2nd Gt Grand Uncle was Horatio Nelson ROWCROFT. He and his brother Charles arrived in Tasmania reported 11 Aug 1821 aboard the 'Grace'. On 18 Aug 1821, the Hobart Town Gazette reported that the Grace went agroung and was not cleared till the next high water after being considerably lightened. Horatio was an old Etonian and had been a farmer at Longford Tas, but it seems he was ill suited to farming and he took up editorship of the Geelong Advertiser abt 1850.
I believe Horatio's son in law Rev. Charles Ludwig H Rupp was Headmaster at Geelong Grammar. Charles' wife Mary Ann Catherine Rupp (nee Rowcroft) also taught there as did her brother Alfred Peel Rowcroft.
Thomas Rowcroft wed to Janet Guest
1. Thomas Hope Rowcroft Birth: 27 Oct 1793 Christening: 19 Mar 1794 son of Janet and Thomas Rowcroft at Saint Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England
2. Charles Rowcroft was born on 12 July 1798 and Christening: 14 Aug 1798 son of Janet and Thomas Rowcroft at St Lawrence Poutney, London, London, England the son of Thomas Rowcroft, an East India merchant and London alderman, and his wife Jannett, née Guest.
3. Horatio Rowcrofts Birth: 06 Jan 1806 Christening: 06 Jan 1807 son of Janet and Thomas Rowcroft at St Botolph Bishopsgate, London, London, England
Horace (Horatio Nelson) Rowcroft and his brother Charles arrived in Tasmania in 1821 aboard the Grace. Charles Rowcroft Esq, Passenger aboard the Cumberland departed 17 Sep 1825 from Hobart for England
Charles Thomas Rowcroft was the first British diplomatic representative in Peru. He arrived in Lima as Consul General in 1825, accompanied by his daughter, Ellen. His son and writer Charles Rowcroft stayed in the UK. At this time Lima was temporarily in the power of the royalists. Conditions in the city were awful. Ellen disappeared, and her father was killed in cross-fire.
After hearing of his father's death, Charles Rowcroft left Van Diemen's Land in the Cumberland, and sailed by way of Sydney to Brazil. The eight children and Jane, the widow of Thomas Oakley Curling, who had died in Hobart in March, sailed on the same ship; on 16 December Rowcroft married Mrs Curling at San Sebastian on the Rio de Janeiro. William Pritchard Weston was in Tasmania in 1824 and was granted 2000 acres (809 ha) of land which he first considered taking at Great Swan Port and later applied for at Bothwell. There for some time he assisted the settlers, Charles and Horace Rowcroft, and is said to have been the hero of a number of incidents described by Charles Rowcroft in Tales of the Colonies (London, 1845). Charles Rowcroft sailed for London from New York in the Cherubim on 17 August 1856, and died, somewhat mysteriously, at sea on 23 August. He left two daughters and three sons, and a widow who was granted a civil list pension.
Horatio Rowcroft Passenger aboard the Admiral Cockburn departed 15 Feb 1825 from Hobart for Port Jackson, Sydney He returned to Tasmania, where he took up farming, as we see in this story of one of his assigned servants.
Samuel Ackerley convict came on the Persian, 7 Nov 1830, Ploughman aged 34 from Chester tried 19 Apr 1830 and in Tas at Hobart on 24 Jan 1831, was allocated to Horace Rowcroft. Had problems - on 12 Oct 1833 he was sentenced to 50 lashes for gross disobedience to his master, again in trouble 13 Aug 1834 accused of stealing but case dismissed. Ackerley got his Free Certificate No 382 in 1840
Horatio was an old Etonian and had been a farmer at Longford Tas, but it seems he was ill suited to farming and he took up editorship of the Geelong Advertiser abt 1850.
Horace Rowcroft/Horatio Nelson Rowcroft 1806 - 1878 #1747 aged 72 son of Jeanette Stausten (should be Janet Guest) and Thomas Rowcroft, wed 18 March 1831 to Mary Ann Catherine Stammers at Hobart, Tasmania. She was the relict (widow) of Lieut Stammers, late of the 8th Hussars. Arthur Jay STAMMERS b. c1779 Christened 1782 in Belchamp St Paul's Essex to Samuel Stammers and Martha JAY (Late Lieut.of 8th Light Dragoons/Hussars ex-India) died 17 July 1828 aged abt 49. Horace Rowcroft was the editor of the Geelong Advertiser.
