Thomas Purvis

From on Wed, 23 May 2007

Dear Elizabeth,
re "Thomas Purvis 1822 - 1876 #13593 aged 54, son of Margaret Parker and Henry Purvis of Tyrone,"
I am researching a Margaret PURVIS age 15 who arrived on the Salette arriving at Port Phillip in January 1841 along with your Thomas (19), Jane (17) who were all separately listed on a special unmarried page and the family of Henry 39, Margaret 38 & children Mary 13, Henry 11, James 9 & Sarah 5. Henry is listed as a Gardener & Margaret (snr) a bonnet maker both from Ireland.
'My" Margaret married John HEFFERNAN in 1844 & died in 1873. In her death record, her parents are Henry PURVIS & Margaret HARTNETT. Now I notice that your Thomas has Margaret PARKER as his mother's name in his death record & brother James has no mention of his mother's maiden name.
I haven't been able to find anything else on Henry PURVIS & Margaret PARKER / HARTNETT. I am wondering if you have any more clues as to their origins in Tyrone? Or have found either Henry's or Margaret (snr)'s deaths in Victoria?

-----------

I think that that Henry PURVIS died 1870 age 72 is our man. It agrees with the other Purvis tree you found.

The Margaret died 1898 age 72 (ie born 1826) is sadly too young to be our Margaret - our lass was born about 1798 - 1800 time. I searched & searched but couldn't find her death record. (It definitely isn't 1870 as per the Purvis tree)

Looking at the Victorian records (as you suggested), I think I have found an older son (who I didn't see on the "Salsette" passenger record):
Death record:
John PURVIS died 1863 (4514) son of Henry & Margaret {surname unkown} age 44 born Tyrone [Ireland]

I then tried to find the death records of all the Purvis children (I have the certificate for my Margaret) to see what happened to them & what name entered for their mother:

Children of Henry PURVIS & Margaret:
1. John (1819-1863); no obvious marriage record; death record has Henry Purvis & Margaret {surname unknown}
2. Thomas (1822-1876); married 1847 Mary Jane Anderson; death record has Henry Purvis & Margaret PARKER
3. Jane (1824-?1883); no obvious marriage record; if the Jane Purvis who died age 60 in 1883 is "ours", the death record has parents unknown
4. Margaret (1826-1873); married 1844 John Heffernan; death record has Henry Purvis & Margaret HARTNETT
5. Mary (1828-1908); married 1846 John Beech; death record has Henry Purvis & Margaret PARKES
6. Henry (1830-); no obvious marriage record; what happened to him?
7. James (1832-); no obvious marriage record; what happened to him?
8. Sarah (1836- 1917); married 1854 John Dickson Love; death record has John Purvus & Sarah PARKES

I think the vote is for PARKES. Thomas' certificate might well have Parkes & the index transcriber may have mis-read it as Parker. Thanks,
Bron, Western Australia

Henry Purvis had a brother called John Purvis, who married a Margaret Lehiff in Tyrone then both emigrated to Maldon in Australia.
