From Barbara Clay in GenForum on 26 Dec 2005
Elizabeth Darke (nee Hastie, born circa 1783 in Barnstaple, Devon, England) was transported to Sydney on the convict ship Mary 3 on 18 October 1823, along with her daughter, also named Elizabeth. Elizabeth senior had apparently been married to a James Baker Darke, born c. 1784 in England, but had left her husband and their children in a workhouse, presumably in London. One of these children, Helen Hastie Darke, born 1806 in London, wed Jul-Sep 1838 in UK to Frederick John Plumridge, and died August 11, 1862 in Australia.
The entry for Elizabeth Darke on the ship's passenger list is barely legible, however her native place is shown as Barnstaple, she was convicted somewhere in Devon on 29 July 1822 and sentenced for 14 years. The record shows her as aged 40, 5 ft 1&3/4 inches tall, fresh complexion with brown eyes (couldn't read the colour of her hair) and occupation given as 'cook illegible'.
From MyHeritage, Sarah Chapman was born circa 1781 and baptised at All Saints, Wakefield, West Riding of York, on 4 August 1781. Her parents were William Chapman and Sarah Race, who were married at Horbury, West Riding of York on 2 December 1770. Sarah was sent to Sydney as a convict -
"Sarah Chapman late of Wakefield in the West Riding of the County of York. single woman on the twenty third day of September in the fortieth year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George King of Great Britain and so forth with force and arms at the Parish of Sheffield in the West Riding of the county of York one women's Cloth Cloak of the value of six pence and one Checked Apron of the value of four pence of the goods of one William Marsden. Witnesses Sarah Marsden, Thomas Gillot, and Samuel Hall. Then and there found did then and there feloniously steal, take and carry away, against the peace of the said Lord the now King his Crown and Dignity."
Found Guilty - to be confined in the House of Correction one month in a solitary cell. While in prison, a law was passed in Great Britain that all women under sentence, provided they were fit, healthy and under forty-five years old, were to be transported, so Sarah's sentence was altered to transportation for seven years.
She sailed from Spithead on the Nile on June 21, 1801. The route the ship took was via Rio, taking 176 days to reach Sydney Town, arriving on December 14, 1801. The Nile was a ship of 322 tons, built in Newcastle in 1799, the Master was James Sunter, the Surgeon was Joseph Hislop. Her 4th child was born on December 2, 1814, a son named George, the father's name given at the baptism was George William Dixon. He became known as William George Chapman. He wed Elizabeth Darke on June 5, 1837 at the Presbyterian Church at Pitt Town (both signed their names with a cross).

Elizabeth Darke was the daughter of Elizabeth Darke, convict who arrived in Sydney Town on the Mary 3 on October 18, 1823, with her daughter Elizabeth, aged 1 1/2 years, Elizabeth senior is described as 5'1 3/4 inches tall, brown eyes, black hair, fresh complexion able to cook, wash, make butter and cheese, aged 40 years. From Barnstaple, England, and left behind a husband and other children in a workhouse. She died in August 1834, aged 56 years. She was living at that time in Harrington Street, the Rocks, Sydney.
William George Chapman and Elizabeth had 13 children and he became quite wealthy. His story has been written by a descendant, Michael Antill.

Hi Elizabeth, I am a little disappointed that you have not started off with Frances Susannah Plumridge who was born in >Dec 1843, followed by Sarah born in 1846, twin girls in 1847 (who unfortunately did not survive), then Agnes Frances Matilda Plumridge (>Mar 1849, in Oxford)(my great grandmother) and Ester Ann Emily (>Dec 1850, in Oxford)
I could find no record of them arriving in Victoria, but found out that they arrived in Port Misery (Adelaide).
I find tracing my ancestors most interesting.
Regards, Coral Dedman
