Charles Edward Pearce

From on Sat, 1 June 2013
Hi, I had a lovely read of your website and thought I’d send you a bit more info on Charles Pearce, the one who married Ann Rock, in case you wished to update your information. Attached is the death cert of Ann Pearce (nee Rock) and notes on their descendants, so you can update the childrens information you have listed (if you wish of course).
Further I have found Ann was baptised as Hannah Rook (the Vicar wrote Ann as a note next to the entry), it may have been “accents” when she came to Australia that made it be recorded as Rock here. Hope these are helpful for correcting the entry regarding Charles E Pearce and Ann Rock.
Thankyou for all the work you’ve done on your website. Regards, Judy
From Rootsweb by Bob Pearce 1999, Charles Pearce born c1811 Hants Bishopstoke Southampton. We believe he married a Sarah c1828/9. They had six children. Bob's connection - Charles Edwin Pearce b c1831, wed Anne Rocke 10 Aug 1853 we believe in Liverpool England. They were supposed to come to Australia by ship abt 1853/4.
Bob wrote - All our info has been shown under the name of Pearce although when my grt grandfather Wm Robert was recorded we found him shown as Wm Robt Pierce. The convincing thing to prove he was ours listed the parents as Charles Edwin and Anne Rocke. Any info that I can get would be greatly appreciated. Trusting to hear something in the future. Bob Pearce, Perth Western Australia
Judy wrote - I have some of the children’s birth records and the wedding date is stated as the 10th or 18th Aug 1853 on the first one or two, then it just says Aug 1853 on the middle ones and the final one says 1854.

Shadrach Pearce

The Bombay, ship, 1270 tons, Capt. Flamant, was towed from London to reach Plymouth 22 Aug 1852 and then sailed from Plymouth 28 Aug 1852.
Shadrack Pearce aged 29, and Emily Berne aged 24, with Edith aged 3 and Randolph aged 2, boarded the Bombay at Birkenhead England, and arrived at Melbourne 14 Dec 1852.
Passenger numbers for the family were 413, 414, 415, 416, Address given as OXFORD, with Emily now aged 23 (confirming birth year as 1829) both were listed as being able to read & write although this is doubtful having signed the marriage register by marks. Son Randolph, born in England died 6 Dec on board and his brother Randolph Hobson PEARCE was born 2 weeks after his brothers death and 2 days before disembarkation)
After a journey by train from Oxford to London and a medical inspection at the Emigrant depot the Pearce family went on board the Bombay with 450 other hopeful emigrants. The Lord Mayor of London farewelled them all as the Bombay was towed down the river Thames by two steam tugs, Rob Roy and Robert Burns. A calm passage was had to Plymouth arriving on the 22nd of August. On the 26th the Bombay took on 250 west country emigrants, 25 sheep, 12 pigs, 1 cow, poultry, fresh fruit and vegetables.
On the 29th of August she finally left Plymouth for Port Phillip. After leaving the calm waters close to England the sea was rough and many suffered from sea sickness. It was during a violent storm in the Bay of Biscay that the first of 24 deaths occurred on the voyage. Twenty four deaths included; a sailor lost overboard in the southern seas, 2 emigrants drowned, typhus took four and a five year old girl died after falling down the main hatchway. Many sharks were seen following the ship so they killed some, cut them up and threw the pieces overboard, no doubt hoping that would satisfy the rest, so they could carry on with the funeral services.
The Bombay took a route across the Southern Ocean following the 40th parallel to spare the emigrants the extreme cold of the Great Circle Route. Cold weather, gales and hail storms buffeted the ship.
By the 11th of December the Bombay anchored inside the heads at the quarantine ground to await inspection and clearance. A short distance from them lay the disease ridden Triconderoga.
When the emigrants learnt of her voyage they, although they had a rough trip, thought themselves very lucky. Fresh meat and vegetables bought on board made the last reach up the bay to Melbourne more comfortable, arriving on the 14th of Dec 1852. The crew were persuaded by the local police to stay on board to help in the unloading, before they requested relief to go to the goldfields.
699 assisted immigrants/emigrants (333 male, 366 female) and 68 crew were on board when docking at the Melbourne Wharves.
Argus of the 15th of December 1852 tells the story far better than I. It reads:
The Bombay, ship, 1270 tons, Capt. Flamant, from London, 114 days out, with 706 Government Emigrants, anchored at the Heads on Saturday evening; from information received yesterday morning it appears that 24 deaths had occurred on the voyage; two from drowning, four from typhus fever, ( one of which occurred just on entering the Heads ) the others from general diseases. This vessel came up off Gellibrand’s Point yesterday afternoon with the quarantine flag flying at the main, and at the time the Health Officer left Williams Town, it was supposed she would be either sent to the quarantine anchorage off Brighton, or back to the sanitary station at Point Napean.

Shadrach Pearce 12 Dec 1828 - 28 Jul 1881 aged 52, son of Aaron Pearce b: Abt 1803 in Thame, Oxfordshire, and Damaris King b: Bef 20 Nov 1803 in Sydenham, Oxfordshire, England wed on the 25th of August 1847 in the Church of St Mary, the Parish of Birkenhead in the County of Chester, to Emily 'Frances' Berne b: 31 May 1829 - 7 Oct 1918 born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, dau of John Berne (a mariner). From Shadrach Pearce and Emily's marriage certificate is Entry # 417 of St Mary's of Birkenhead. Marriage witnesses include Mary Ann Pearce, Shadrach's sister. Both signed by their marks. Shadrach was listed as a shoemaker of full age although only 18 at the time. Later census records confirm his year of birth as 1829. No further records of any Pearce family was found in the records of St Mary's covering the period 1815 -1835, or of christenings in the period of 1848-51. Nothing was found in the same period for Berne or Burne.
