Thanks to who wrote on Tuesday, 13 January, 2009 and clarified some of my errors, including my mixing up of two men named David Peach

Thanks to who wrote on Sunday 7 Dec 2008, I have found the shipping record of arrival - just a spelling variation
Thomas Peech aged 42 came Nov 1849 on the James T Foord with Thomas Peech 16, Ruth Peech 15, Ephtiam Peech 13, Manoah Peech 11, Amos Peech 8 and Elizabeth Peech aged 5. His wife Catherine, newborn daughter and son John aged 18 all died during the voyage.

See this Page 5, passengers on the ship James T Foord - arrived 7 Nov 1849

David Mansfield has a link to his page on the barque "James Thomas Foord", more commonly referred to in extant records as “James T. Foord”. It was a converted whaling ship of some 790 tons, built in Quebec, Canada in 1844, by Thomas Hamilton Oliver, Shipbuilder, at his shipyard in the Seigniory of Saint Roch on the River Saint Charles. Her length was 131 feet, breadth 29 feet (the widest part of the vessel from outside plank to outside plank above or below the water-line) and depth 22 feet (hold measured from tonnage deck to ceiling amidships). She was later sold to Halheads of Liverpool, England. Rated as A1 for five years by Lloyds, she had some damage repaired in 1848, when she was sheathed with yellow metal for speed.

The worst cholera ship afloat
The James T. Foord arrived in Port Phillip on 7th. November 1849 after a journey from England lasting four months. Of a total of 269 Bounty passengers (81 children) and a crew of 37 embarking from Plymouth, England on 17th. July 1849, 54 emigrants died on the voyage and were buried at sea, 23 of these being children. Concise accounts of this voyage can be found in the books, "THE SOMERSET YEARS" by Florence Chuk, State Library of Victoria, and "PERILOUS VOYAGES TO THE NEW LAND", by Michael Cannon.
It was a terrible voyage. The master of the ship, Charles Henry Elliott, had given the passengers bad food and cut their supplies of toiletries and water. Thirty-three passengers died of cholera alone, besides other deaths on the voyage to Australia. The "James T. Foord" initially left Gravesend, England on about the 7th. of July 1849, arriving at Plymouth, England on the 12th. July. She lay here at anchor for five days before sailing for Port Phillip Australia, arriving there on the 7th. of November, 1849. Complaints about conditions on board led to a special Board of Enquiry being convened in Melbourne in 1849. The enquiry found that the master and the third officer were guilty of fraudulent and unfeeling conduct and in the case of the third officer of brutal conduct. It was said of the surgeon that while he apparently "carried out his duties with efficiency and humanity" during the epidemic, he was not blameless because he failed to "see the immigrants done justice to in the issue of their rations".
Thomas Peach, father to Ephraim Peach, had severe personal losses on this trip. His eldest son John, aged 18 years, died of cholera on 31st. July, 1849. His wife Catherine gave birth to a daughter on September 23rd. but died on 30th. September of puerperal fever. The baby died ten days later, succumbing to 'summer diarrhoea'. It is likely that Catherine's health, like that of many of the emigrants, had been severely affected by the fraudulent behaviour of the ship’s officers.

From on Monday, 16 August, 2010

Hi Elizabeth, I came across your website today, and noticed that you had the marriage of above couple.
I live in Scotland and have been researching my family tree, and although I knew that the Wardrop family emigrated to Australia, until recently, I was unable to track them after their arrival in Collingwood.
James Wardrop husband of Sarah Peach, was born in Glagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1850. He was the son of George Wardrop and Henrietta Lamont.( Henrietta Lamont's father and my own ggg grandfather were brothers.) James emigrated to Australia with his parents in Oct 1852. He was the only surviving Scots born child in the family. All subsequent siblings were born in Australia.
I can find just 2 children born to James and Sarah, but both died in infancy/childhood.
They were: Henrietta Lamont Wardrop 1880-1895 and Sarah Wardrop 1895-1895.
On your website it states that Sarah Peach's grandparents were believed to have come from Ellington, Huntingdon in England.
James was a schoolmaster and lived in Heidelberg. Between 1896 and 1909, James ( and Sarah) owned and lived at "Ellington House" 141 Cape Street, Heidelberg.
Is that coincidence?
In 1909 the house was tranfrerred to the Scots Church Trustees and was used as the Manse.
I have not yet found any death record for either James or Sarah.
I hope this is of interest to you.
Regards Anne

Elizabeth I recently received an email from Tasmania about the Peach family. As a result I began checking details and found an earlier email from a close friend who had mentioned your website.
Can I just say what a fantastic job you have done? I hope at some point to put together a resource similar to yours on my family, the Fatchens.
But now down to the point at hand. My grandmother was Edith Charlotte Hill. Her parents were Walter James Hill and Mary Edith Peach. Mary's parents were Ephraim and Edith Hailstone.
Mary and Walter's family consisted of 5 girls as follows:
1. Ettie Hill b 1895 in Collingwood, Vic d 1979 in Murrumbeena, Vic. Married Burton Wilson Westhorpe in 1916. He died in Melbourne, Vic 1954. They had 2 children, Gordon Wilson b 1916 and Walt Ray b 1918. Both boys were born in North Fitzroy.
2. Edith Charlotte Hill b 25 December 1896 in Collingwood, Vic d 23 March 1971 in Nunawading, Vic. Married Athol Richard Melville Fatchen on 22 December 1922. He was born 16 October 1900 in Broadford, Vic and died 30 November 1973 in Nunawading, Vic. Four children in the family, Edith, Athol, Walter and Ross all born after 1920.
3. Elizabeth Emmeline Hill b 1900 in Collingwood, Vic and died 1909 in Coburg, Vic.
4. Myrtle Florence Hill b 1904 in Collingwood, Vic and died 1905 in Colingwood, Vic.
5. Emily Jane Hill b 21 September 1908 and died 24 April 2000 in Vermont Nursing Home, Vic. She is buried in Fawkner Cemetery, Vic.
Once again, thank you for your work. I hope you will continue with this as it is the only way for the past to remain relevant.
