Dear Eliza, I have been searching for records of my Great Great Grandfather John Southey Paterson who apparently emigrated from Scotland aboard the passenger ship Algiers in 1857. I also believe that his brother Robert Craigie Paterson was also with him.
The Argus, Melbourne, Vic. Friday 26 June 1857 has arrival, but not Imports list for the Algiers, The passenger list, when divided into families, single men, and single women, shows 162 single men (who could be husbands going to make the money to pay wife's passage) plus 10 boys aged 15 to 19, and 5 men over 40 not with others of their surname. Plus 120 in family groups, with 40 aged under 18.
