Hello Elizabeth
Have just come across your pioneer Australian families website while looking for information regarding James Bickford Moysey and his cousin Nicholas Moysey Bickford. The cousins took up land at Beaumaris.
Nicholas Moysey Bickford was my great grandfather and I am interested to understand the relationship by which he and James were cousins. Did one of Nicholas's aunts marry a Moysey perhaps?
Regards, Jennifer Cobb

Jonathan Mitchell

Note two families surnames Mitchell travelled Feb 1855 on the Glennanna, listed on separate pages
Page 006, Eliza, William both adults, child Ann and infant Martha
Page 8, Ann, John and Sophia all adults
Sophia and Jonathan Mitchell had 19 children born to them over 23 years, but only 3 reached adulthood. Their 19th, born when Sophia was 46, is the father of 12, with 11 known marriages.
Jonathan is the nephew of Robert Cowley who wed 1855 #51 to Elizabeth Shannon Boyd and had no children. Robert was Best Man for Samman Lummis, and Elizabeth took over care of his 9 children when 31 year old Julia died just after the birth of their 9th child.
Jonathan Mitchell 1820 - 29 Mar 1880 aged 54, son of Thomas Mitchell and Martha Cowley, who wed 1847 to Sophia Sessions 1825 - 8 June 1899, daughter of Jonathan and Anne Blizzard. Names of John's parents from his death certificate.
Jonathan and Sophia's first two children, Annie and Emily Sophia, were born in England.
The family travelled to Australia 1855 on the Glenmanna and lived at Collingwood till 1858 when they decided to go to the goldfields. Emma died, and they decided to move to the Hard Hills area, near Tarnagulla.
Wrongly accused On arriving in the Hard Hills area, Jonathan discovered a man hanging from a tree, and was accused of murder. Only after a lengthy court case was he cleared, but the tree was popular, and the track beside it is still called Hangman's Lane.
Their children are
1. Annie Mitchell 1848 - 10 May 1912 born in UK, wed in Vic to Philip Pippin then to John McDonald
2. Emily Sophia Mitchell died 1853
3. John George Mitchell died 1855

8. Justina Mitchell 17 Mar 1868 - 3 Oct 1871
9. Joseph Robert Mitchell 15 Apr 1871 - 20 Nov 1951

Altogether, 19 children were born over 23 years, 9 are recorded and Annie (the first born, Sophia was aged 23), Emily (born when Sophia was aged 39) and Joseph (born when his mother was aged 48) survived and wed.

Joseph Robert Mitchell 15 Apr 1871 - 20 Nov 1951 wed c1894 to Mary Ann Britten, born 1869,
12 Children 1. Hope Mitchell 5 Feb 1895 - 17 Nov 1987, wed James Arnold 11 June 1882 - 11 Sept 1959

This letter came Tue, 11 Mar 2003 from , who provided the Cowley details.
Reading up a little more on Robert Cowley (brother of Martha Cowley who married Thomas Mitchell) I have found that Jonathon Mitchell (your website) was christened John and was son of Thomas Mitchell whose father was William Mitchell of fairford who married Anne (surmname unknown).
Anyway, William Mitchell had other children, one of which was named John Mitchell, and in the book Gloucester Machine Breakers it advises that he John Mitchell (who was the brother of Thomas) was arrested, tried, convicted and transported on the Eliza to VDL (Tasmania) for machine breaking with Robert Cowley (his brother in law). Thus it appears John (Jonathon) Mitchell who subsequently came to Aus, had two convict uncles there Robert (his mums brother) and John (his Dad's brother)
Nothing major in this but it brings home the fact that the lives of two families Mitchells and Cowleys must have been changed when two brothers in law via Martha were transported.
It is also interesting to note that Thomas and Martha had a son who was christened Robert (I would imagine after Martha's brother) on 15th May 1831 shortly before Robert and John arrived in Tasmania, having sailed on 6th February from Portsmouth.

Phillip Mitchell

From on Wed, 8 Nov 2006
I am not sure about which ship Phillip Mitchell arrived. I have been to Public Records Office of Victoria, and it looks like the Phillip on the "Star of the East" is him. He is listed separately from the other Mitchell's on the ship and his age and occupation are about right. His wife, Maria Ellen nee Penrose, arrived with their daughter, Mary, on the "Eastern City" in 1855. Phillip also had a brother, Richard, who emigrated to Australia with his wife and son in 1857 on the "Mary Ann".
The Star Of The East came Sep 1854 with Alex Mitchell 9, Margaret Mitchell 50, Wm Mitchell 50, Js Mitchell 41, James Mitchell 13, Philip Mitchell 22, Js Mitchell 24 (3 or 4 separate groups)
The Mary Ann came Jan 1857 with William Mitchell Infant, Richard Mitchell 21, David Mitchell 23, Elizabeth Mitchell 20 and Mary Mitchell 18
The Eastern City came Aug 1857 with Mary Mitchell, Jas Mitchell 18 and Ellen Mitchell 24

Hello Elizabeth ,
I am a descendant of Henry Davies Mitchell, he was my Great Grandfather. After Sampson died in a mining accident in 1860’s young Henry was sent to a property named “Lilicur” near Avoca in Victoria and was brought up by Thomas Treblecock. Henry had a son Thomas (my grandfather), he had 6 children one of which is my father Alan (now 80 years old). He and his siblings are all still alive.
Kind Regards, Greg.
Hi,
Thomas Treblecock was quite a puzzle, till I found a reference suggesting his surname may also be spelled Trebilcock
and then I found a marriage - Thomas Trebilcock wed 1854 #1805 to Susan Prideaux in Victoria
and remembered Sampson Mitchell wed on 7 Feb 1849 to Catharine Prideaux in Adelaide.
Back to South Australian immigration and found Richard Prideaux, Catherine nee Sims, Edwin, Cath, (Richard), Sarah, Eliza, Susan arrived 23 Jan 1847 on the David Malcolm from London and Plymouth.
It very much looks as if the girls are sisters.
Di Cummings Web page has Thomas Trebilcock 20 Labourer of Cornwall arrived 11 June 1850 on Fatima from London 17 Jan 1850 and Plymouth 13 Feb 1850
So Greg, your Henry went to live with his mother's sister, his Aunty Susan and Uncle Tom, who appear to have had no children.
<@.> From on Thursday, 27 October, 2011
Regarding Thomas Trebilcock he did not come to Australia on the Fatima in 1850 but the ship Statesman under Captain Trivett arrived in Melbourne Friday 24th Nov 1854.
The newspaper report regarding the fatal gunshot refers to the son of Richard and Grace Trebilcock, which is in the bdm index.

From Elizabeth - Thankyou. See my page Trebilcock for more notes on various members of this family

I am pleased to have located your site. I am urgently trying to locate a direct decsendant of John Aver Mitchell, founder of Terowie South Australia.
John Aver Mitchell was the fifth child of Sampson & Mary Ann Mitchell [nee Aver] who came to Australia on La Belle Alliance on 4th April 1847
I have just completed a book 'Terowie Institute 130 Years' A Social History. The book is being launched at Terowie on Saturday 26th Septemebr [in two weeks] by Peter Goers, an A B C radio personality in Adelaide. The book is a tribute to JAM in a sense, for the good reason that he gave the land upon which the Institute was built. And gave much of himself in founding the town. He died a very young man at the age of 46 years.
Thank you, Marina Gray
