Hello Elizabeth
Have just come across your pioneer Australian families website while looking for information regarding James Bickford Moysey and his cousin Nicholas Moysey Bickford. The cousins took up land at Beaumaris.
Nicholas Moysey Bickford was my great grandfather and I am interested to understand the relationship by which he and James were cousins. Did one of Nicholas's aunts marry a Moysey perhaps?
Regards, Jennifer Cobb

John Mitchell wed Bertha Agnes Power

This letter is from , on Monday, 7 March 2016 and again on 15 March 2016
Dear Elizabeth,
I recently found the “Jonathan Mitchell and Phillip Mitchell” website when I was researching my great-grandfather Francis George Mitchell.
I notice that you have listed Francis George Mitchell having married Daisy Trays Halliday. These are my great-grandparents.
However the Francis George Mitchell, the son of John Mitchell and Elizabeth Darling and born in 1873, is not the correct Francis George Mitchell. I have his death certificate which lists his parents as John Mitchell and Bertha Agnes Powers. I also have my g-g-grandmother’s (Bertha Agnes Mitchell nee Power) death certificate which has Francis George Mitchell as the third child out of 11 children. From my research the “marriage” of John and Bertha Agnes and the births of their 11 children were never registered and therefore don’t appear in the VIC BDM index.
This creates all kinds of confusion! Indeed, Francis George and Daisy Trays Mitchell (my great-grandparents) also had three additional children to those listed on your web-site, including my grandmother, whose births were not registered.
A relative who was researching the Mitchell family 30 odd years ago discovered that 9 out of the 11 children were baptised at St Francis and St Patrick’s in Melbourne and I recently obtained my g-grandfather’s baptism transcript from St Patrick’s Cathedral. He was baptised as George Francis Mitchell in 1872 after being born in Collingwood in Oct 1870. The reason that we are sure that this is the correct Francis George is that he was baptised on the same day as his younger brother and the baptism names of the remaining seven out of nine children are a match to those on Bertha Agnes Mitchell’s (nee Power) death certificate.
I hope that this information and correction is useful to you. It is a pity that there is not a link between these Mitchell families as the research you have completed is outstanding and would have really benefited my research. But that is not to be, so I shall continue searching.
If you have any questions, I am more than willing to attempt to answer them and can scan and copy any of the certificates if required.
Kind regards, Mark Smith, Canberra
John Mitchell wed Bertha Agnes Powers.
Mark has his g-g-grandmother’s (Bertha Agnes Mitchell nee Power) death certificate which has Francis George Mitchell as the third child out of 11 children. From his research the “marriage” of John and Bertha Agnes and the births of their 11 children were never registered and therefore don’t appear in the VIC BDM index. This creates all kinds of confusion!

John Mitchell c1844 from Ireland wed c1862 in Hawthorn VIC to Bertha Agnes Power c1844 - 1913 #14595, born in from Westmeath IRE
All 11 children are listed on Bertha Agnes Mitchell’s (nee Power) death certificate.

Jonathan and Sophia Mitchell

Note two families surnames Mitchell travelled Feb 1855 on the Glennanna, listed on separate pages

Sophia and Jonathan Mitchell had 19 children born to them over 23 years, but only 3 reached adulthood. Their 19th, born when Sophia was 46, is the father of 12, with 11 known marriages.
Jonathan is the nephew of Robert Cowley who wed 1855 #51 to Elizabeth Shannon Boyd and had no children. Robert was Best Man for Samman Lummis, and Elizabeth took over care of his 9 children when 31 year old Julia died just after the birth of their 9th child.
Jonathan Mitchell 1820 - 29 Mar 1880 aged 54, son of Thomas Mitchell and Martha Cowley, who wed 1847 to Sophia Sessions 1825 - 8 June 1899, daughter of Jonathan and Anne Blizzard. Names of John's parents from his death certificate.
Jonathan and Sophia's first two children, Annie and Emily Sophia, were born in England.
The family travelled to Australia 1855 on the Glenmanna and lived at Collingwood till 1858 when they decided to go to the goldfields. Emma died, and they decided to move to the Hard Hills area, near Tarnagulla.
Wrongly accused On arriving in the Hard Hills area, Jonathan discovered a man hanging from a tree, and was accused of murder. Only after a lengthy court case was he cleared, but the tree was popular, and the track beside it is still called Hangman's Lane.

This letter came Tue, 11 Mar 2003 from , who provided the Cowley details.
Reading up a little more on Robert Cowley (brother of Martha Cowley who married Thomas Mitchell) I have found that Jonathon Mitchell (your website) was christened John and was son of Thomas Mitchell whose father was William Mitchell of fairford who married Anne (surmname unknown).
Anyway, William Mitchell had other children, one of which was named John Mitchell, and in the book Gloucester Machine Breakers it advises that he John Mitchell (who was the brother of Thomas) was arrested, tried, convicted and transported on the Eliza to VDL (Tasmania) for machine breaking with Robert Cowley (his brother in law). Thus it appears John (Jonathon) Mitchell who subsequently came to Aus, had two convict uncles there Robert (his mums brother) and John (his Dad's brother)
Nothing major in this but it brings home the fact that the lives of two families Mitchells and Cowleys must have been changed when two brothers in law via Martha were transported.
It is also interesting to note that Thomas and Martha had a son who was christened Robert (I would imagine after Martha's brother) on 15th May 1831 shortly before Robert and John arrived in Tasmania, having sailed on 6th February from Portsmouth.
