Sentence details: Felony, Convicted at Bristol City Session of Peace Oyer and Terminer and Gaol Delivery for a term of 14 years. The Competitor departed 18 March 1823 and arrived 03 Aug 1823 in Van Diemen's Land. Hobart Town Gazette and Van Diemen’s Land Advertiser Saturday 9 August 1823, Page 2, top left corner, records the arrival of the Competitor, Captain Ascough having on board 157 male convicts. The prisoners were landed on 7 Aug and inspected by the Lieutenant Governor, and thirty were assigned to Port Dalrymple. The Surgeon Superintendant, Clayton, died at sea, on 8 July. 3 convicts had died at sea and 3 were still sick. The 1st Officer is Mr CW Constable, the 2nd Officer is Mr J Vallancy, and Mr J Twohy id the 3rd Officer of the Competitor. Captain Tronson of His Majesty's 13th Light Infantry (commanding the guard), Lady and family, Mr Uniake Esq. and Miss Blachford were on board. On Saturday 23 August 1823, the Ship News announced that the Competitor will sail for Sydney tomorrow. The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, Thursday 4 September 1823, reported the arrival of the Competitor, with the military guard. On 11 September 1823 the Sydney Gazette announced that the Competitor was about to leave, warning creditors to present all their claims and petitions (this is a routine announcement) There are very few details in Tas records for Robert Matthews. He is number 416, Page 143, worked as a bullock drover for Edward French. His Ticket of Leave, in The Hobart Town Courier Friday 24 August 1832 is shown as "Robert Matthews, 416, do." (third came by Competitor). He was born 2 June 1821 at Harefield, Middlesaex, England, and trained with his father as an architect. He married in 1845 and in 1847 the family sailed to South Africa where he was engaged for 5 years building houses for the settlers.
