I found your site through a google search via Mark Muir and Mary Kirk, I think I may be related to your Mark Muir, his sister, Susan Muir is my gg grandmother, Susan Muir married John McCracken 1848 Riccarton, Ayrshire, and I see Mark Muir married Mary Kirk in 1850 Riccarton, Ayrshire, can you tell me your relationship to Mark Muir ??? I have a 1855 birth to this couple plus the 1851 census, I think another brother, James Muir also migrated to Australia ..........
In my searches in Scotland, I have the 1841 census in Inch, Wigtownshire of the Muir family, it lists Mark Muir they were all from Ireland, do you think we have a connection ???

I might me totally grasping at straws on the Mark Muir connection, but Mark is such an unusual first name for the early 1800's?

Hi Elizabeth, I think I am on the right track with Mark Muir, he is my gg grandmothers brother. The Muirs were from Ireland, lived in Wigtownshire, Ayrshire for a few years before moving to Riccarton, Ayrshire in the late 1840's. My gg grandmother Susan, married John McCracken in 1848 Riccarton, I have the Marriage Banns, and now her brother Mark Muir married Mary Kirk in Riccarton two years later in 1850.

Mark's father was James Muir, born about 1802 Ireland and his wife, Margaret Campbell also born in Ireland. I have these names from Susan's death certificate, 1897, New Cumnock. I have traced three other brothers in Scotland, William, Richard and Thomas.

Mark Muir 27 came Dec 1857 on the Medway from Ayreshire with Mary Kirk 25, Margaret 5, Jane 3 and Mary 1, and lived at Ballarat
IGI submitted - Mark Muir 1825 - 27 Feb 1902 aged 77. Death certificate details given by Edward Carling, son in law, Mark's mother not known, father correctly named James, all children listed. Died from chronic bronchitis and senile heart aged 77.
