Hi Elizabeth,
John Melville who married Emma Louisa Barrett was my grand uncle and a brother to Francis Jolly Melville, my grandfather.
John and Francis were the sons of Donald and Margaret Melville nee Jolly.
About 2 years ago someone was trying to trace the Melville/Barrett family via ancestry.com. They would not pass my information on unless I paid to join.
John Melville was born c 1841, Aberdeen, Scotland.
He married 24.11.1868, in the house of W (Mr?) Melville, Miller Street, Melbourne. At the time of his marriage he was a bachelor, working as a clerk or a commercial traveller. Emma Louisa Barrett was 18, the daughter of Edward and Esther Jane Barrett (nee Young?). Emma was born in Launceston, Hobart Town, Tasmania. Edward Barrett's rank was sea captain. The marriage was formalised by a Presbyterian Minister, A Robertson. The witnesses were Robert Clark and Eleanor Ann (Barrett?). (Emma's sister and her future brother-in-law)

Esther Jane, b c1875. May Clark, b c1876. Clark after witness on the marriage certificate? May Melville married Charles Phil Winzer, c1906, Victoria.
Gertrude Maud, b 3.4.1878, at Craigiburn, Shire of Broadmeadows Kalkallo. John Melville is now listed as the Station Master.

I don't think all my branch of the family travelled together. The "Oliver Lang" arrived in September 1854.

It is possible that the John Melville, age 13, who travelled on the "Candace" and arrived September 1854, is the one who married Emma Louisa Barrett

The Oliver Lang brings no cargo
The theatrical world will learn with pleasure that Mr and Mrs Clarence Holt, from the Royal Olympic Theatre, London, have come out in the Oliver Lang, for the purpose of following their profession in these colonies. The whole of the passengers, reaching nearly 500 souls, have enjoyed remarkable good health, and not a single death occurred during the passage.
