Benjamin/Bean Maw

This birth does not match the age when Bean Maw died in Vic, Australia - Bean Maw christened 05 Nov 1828 at Truro, Cornwall, England son of Ann and Robert Maw, as well as wrong parent - the Benjamin who wed Jane Ascott had father named Benjamin Maw.

From Marilyn Kulpinski on Thursday, 22 September 2011 and Thursday, 13 September 2012
Hi Elizabeth, Thanks for all your work on Pioneer Families in Victoria. (Benjamin) Bean Maw was my g. g. g. grandfather and I’m trying to make sense of what is entered on the website regarding him below - I found the marriage index. Bean’s name is misspelt (Benjamin Beanman) though this must be him as the wife is Jane Ascott.
See my web page on Bean Maw Jane Ascott came on the Countess of Yarborough.
Family tradition is that Bean Maw was a sailor.
Jane Ascott wed 1854 #84 to Benjamin Beanman - a surname misunderstanding - his name should be Bean Maw.
Here are the details… Entry 84 no 22.
March 21 1854 at Trinity Church, Pentridge by Banns. (Members of the church) according to the rights of the Church of England. Benjamin Bean Maw, Bachelor from Truro and Jane Ascott, Spinster from Devonshire. Benjamin was 24 and Jane 22, both currently living in Brunswick.
Fathers Benjamin Bean Maw a Customs House Officer and Anne Maw, and Thomas Ascott, Wheelwright and Elizabeth Maw.
In the presence of ??? Ascott, a relative? I thinks it’s George and the signature of the witness underneath has gone over his a bit? and withness A ??? Williamson. They both signed their names so they could both write!
This means Benjamin would have had to have been born in 1830 or 1829 if he had not yet had a birthday. This also coincides with his death index where it states he died in 1883 at age 52 and was born around 1831. Again, with his death certificate if he had already had a birthday his birth year would be 1831 but if he had not yet had his birthday it would be 1830. Therefore surely his year of birth had to be 1830? Which means he can’t possibly be the Bean Maw son of Robert as stated on your website (and documented in many other family trees!)

Assisted Immigrants George Ascott 29 and Thomas Ascott 21 came May 1851 on the James T Foord
Unassisted Immigrant Jane Ascott aged 21 came on the barque, 367 ton Countess Of Yarborough, Captain John Sumner, arrived at Melbourne Mon 26 Dec 1853, from London 11 July and then the Cape, with 14 Cabin and 87 steerage passengers (12 single women including grandmother Margaret Gallagher aged 50, 8 families with 12 chn, and 56 single men) - see Passenger list for Countess of Yarborough, arrived 26 Dec 1853, the ship brought some passengers from the Cape of Good Hope.
Countess of Yarborough was in 1852-1853 owned and Captained by Bennett, in 1853-4 was owned by Goodwin, and Captained by John Sumner

From Marilyn - Bean Maw gained his Great Britain, Masters and Mates Certificates Issued at Lancashire, England on 22 Nov 1857 Certificate Number: 64.354 after ten years in service. He was working for the British Merchant Service in Foreign Trade so he was in and out of ports! So he would have started working for them in 1847. This is also the reason an immigration record cannot be found for him. Note he married Jane Ascott (as previously stated) 21 March 1854 - seven years after starting work with the Merchant Service and three years before he gained his certificate
While he stated his father as being Benjamin Bean Maw (untrue) the statement that his father was a House Customs Officer was true. He also stated his age as 24. He was actually 27. Did he marry without permission because he was still apprenticed to the British Navy? There were very heavy penalties for 'jumping ship' including goal and flogging so perhaps he was trying to hide his identity?
