December 2.-Marco Polo, Arrived at Port Phillip Heads, R.M. ship, 1,625 tons, James Clarke, from Liverpool 5th September. Passengers - cabin: Mr. and Mrs. Drummond, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and family, Miss Saunders, Miss Grant, Miss Shepherd, Miss Mason, Miss Smith, Mrs Bainbridge, and family, Messrs H. Hooper, G.P. Dodge, J McEvoy, R O'Rourke, J Currie, Hoffman, Elliott, McMurray, Lindsey; and five hundred in the intermediate and steerage. Mackay, Baines, and Co. agents.
The Argus Reporter's comment 5 Dec 1856, Page 4, H.M. Colonial steam-sloop Victoria ran alongside the Marco Polo at half-past twelve o'clock about seven miles outside the Heads, and requested the mail ship to heave-to and deliver the mails. This the Pilot refused to do. The consequence was that considerable delay took place, and it was not until half-past three o'clock that the mails were transhipped. But for this delay the mails might have been sorted and partially delivered in Melbourne yesterday evening, and the letters for the country districts have saved this morning's post.
The pilot would not allow our reporter to board the Star of the East for more particulars, as the Immigration Officer had not visited her. The number of passengers was only guessed by the Captain, who stated they were "something between four hundred and sixty, and five hundred, say four hundred and ninety". Only one death occurred during the voyage. On the 29th September spoke the troop ship Trafalgar, from London to Madras, In lat 7.18, N., and lat. 25, W., which ship reported having exchanged colors on the previous day with the Morning Light from Bristol to this port. On the 2nd of October spoke the Pioneer, bound to Sydney, in lat. 4.50, N., lon. 22.30, W.
December 18, Marco Polo ship, 1626 tons, J Clarke, entered Out for Liverpool. There is no mention of the Imports she brought, or Exports and passengers she was to carry, nor her departure.

Isaac Edward Dyason who married Harriet Mason on 9 May 1881, and their unnamed children were born in February 1882, March 84, April 86 and March 89, and one of the children died in February 1891. Dyason was one of a handful of speculators who were involved in deep quartz gold mining, and these speculators reaped substantial rewards from the Bendigo quartz reefs. Frank Cusack, in his book "Bendigo, A History", [Heinemann Australia 1973] refers to the First, Fifth and Seventh White Hills, which were areas of alluvial gold. The Fifth was the site of a mass meeting of gold miners on 13 June 1853 agitating for diggings licence reform, land auctions and the lifting of restrictions on liquor sales on the goldfields.
A little more was learnt of Isaac Edward from an entry in the Australian Dictionary of Biography about his third child, Edward Clarence Evelyn Dyason (1886-1949), who was born on 8 April 86 at Sandhurst, a company director, economist, mining engineer and stockbroker.

6. William Mason b abt 1883
From © on Thu, 8 May 2003
My hubby is a decendant of Maria (Rebecca Margaret) Wachtershauser (nee Mason) brother George Mason who was born in 1873.
Maria & George's mother Maria Mason nee Sheldon died in 1883 in Nagambie, Vic. It is said that thier father William Mason was a drunk & the kids were found on the streets shortly after their Mum died. I don't know how true this is. Maria Wachtershauser had 4 brothers & a sister Sarah who died as a baby. There may be other kids I haven't found. The brothers are: William b abt 1871, George b 1873, Hugh Gordon b ? & Joseph b 1878.
George & Hugh went to live in New Zealand. Obviously Maria Wachtershauser stayed here, the other kids I can't find! Maria Wachtershauser's father Willam Mason was born in Armagh Ireland.
Now what I need to know is:
Does any family member have Maria Wachtershausers marriage cert, 1903, Bendigo? If so can I get a copy please?
Does any family member have her birth cert, which is in the name of Rebecca Mason born in Nagambie, Vic in 1876. & her death cert 1963 in Bendigo.
If so can I get copies of those also please?
I would love a photo of Johann & Maria Wachtershauser if at all possible & would like to know if any of the family might have photo's of Maria's parents or siblings.
Thanks Elizabeth for all your help,
I also have a website Ottolangui/Langley Family History, Ottolenghi is the Italian spelling of our name. Menachem's son David, born in Livorno in 1734, arrived in London, England in 1776 and attended the Bevis Marks Synagogue. Here the spelling of Ottolenghi changed to Ottolengui, Ottolangui and other alternate spellings. Later many families anglicized the name to Langley.
Cheers Merle

William Rutherford Mason

Wm Rutherford Mason, 1833 - 1892 #15331 aged 59 died at Richmond, son of Anna Grendell and Fred Mason, Mary Elizabeth Mason nee Bird christened 22 May 1831, dau of John and Mary Bird at Brayton, Yorkshire, England, died at Richmond, 1889 #4697 aged 62 Hi, I am so glad you are having a happy friendship with your family research.
I am busy researching people who arrived in Port Phillip, before Melbourne was declared a city. I did one data list, and now am going back over the records (more are now online) to see if more names emerge, as contrasted with more facts about one person. Am doing ships that are reported to have called at Melbourne, Port Fairy, Portland Bay before 1840 when the Melbourne newspsper is preserved.
So looking at your surnames is a very pleasant sidetrack.
I see I did some notes on William Ruthurford Mason on 7 Feb 2011, and now find two deaths
Wm Rutherford Mason, 1833 - 1892 #15331 aged 59 died at Richmond, son of Anna Grendell and Fred Mason, Mary Elizabeth Mason nee Bird christened 22 May 1831, dau of John and Mary Bird at Brayton, Yorkshire, England, died at Richmond, 1889 #4697 aged 62

That is a bit of a surprise - do not usually see girls aged 25 marrying lads aged 19, especially before and around 1852, when girls were in short supply
The nearest FamilySearch turns up is Mary Elizabeth Bird christened 22 MAY 1831 dau of John and Mary Bird at Brayton, Yorkshire, England
I see that the FirstFamilies2001 page, written 10 Oct 1999
confirms these ages, then has an arrival 13 Dec 1852 on the Sullock Castle, which I can not prove.
The Tullock Castle arrived 11 Dec 1852 at Melbourne with 13 cabin and 206 passengers in Intermediate and Steerage, including
William R Mason aged 19 came Dec 1852 on the Tulloch Castle
and Mary Eliz Bind aged 26 came Dec came 1852 on the
Tulloch Castle - Bind a misunderstanding for Bird
probably the death dates, 18 Mar 1889 for Mary and 10 Nov 1892 for Wm are correct

William Ruthurford Mason wed 1852 #26098 to Mary Elizabeth Bird at Church of England, St Pauls, Melbourne and travelled a different place for each birth, till 1859 when settled at Vaughan
query - did first child die? unusual to see 2 sons with same names as first one
7 children 1. William Alfred Mason 1853 #1427 born at Campaspie and died - names given to the next two sons
2. William John Mason 1856 #5856 born at Loddon Junction
3. Alfred Mason 1857 #7532 born at Fryers Creek
4. Mary Eliza Mason 1859 #9599 born at Vaughan

John Johnstone Matthewson

Hi Elizabeth,
I have finally confirmed that my G Grandmother, Jane Saunders, is not the daughter of William Saunders and Jane Whitesides as we thought. Therefore, the husband and children added to their daughter Jane now unknown.
My Jane Saunders was born in 1848, not 1846, and her parents are not William and Jane.
I apologise if I have mislead in any way, but the marriage of my Jane to John Johnston Matthewson is absolutely correct as their daughter, Emma Matthewson, is my grandmother.
Kind regards, Judith
