Alfred Male

From on Friday, 29 June 2012
Dear Elizabeth,
I have recently begun indulging in a little family history research and have found your website a very valuable source of information. As a Wilson, Hawkins, Eagle, Watts & Male descendant there has been plenty of information to get me started. I would like to offer a little more on Alfred MALE and his wife Harriet.
Alfred, Harriet and their infant daughter, Elizabeth arrived in Port Jackson, New South Wales on November 19th 1849 aboard the Petrel, departed Plymouth on the 12th August 1949 with 326 bounty immigrants. On board were 56 married couples, 63 single men, 64 single women, 34 male and 32 female children ages 1 to 14 years and 21 infants. Alfred and Harriet had one child in England before their voyage to Australia, one child in Sydney, New South Wales and eight children in Victoria.

1. Elizabeth Male, born in Langport District, Somerset, and birth registered Jan-Mar 1849, and died 22 May 1916 after falling in the Brisbane River. The Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933), Tuesday 23 May 1916, Page 6, "Found Drowned", Elizabeth Blake or Batten, lived with Henry Blake, body recovered from the river, South Brisbane.

From on Monday 25 Nov 2013
Finding Elizabeth was made difficult because she used several surnames.
The break-through came from Greg Davis (Greg Davis Geneology) as a result of my query to his website. Greg found Trove Articles re Elizabeth's death in 1916 by drowning in the Brisbane River.
Finding Elizabeth was also made difficult because of the significant variations in her reported age;
Elizabeth and (Edward) Henry Blake were partners from 1892 until the time of her death in May 1916, when Blake reported Elizabeth to have "two of a family; whereabouts unknown". If this refers to Fred and Maud, the assumption can be made that Elizabeth did not have any other living children and was probably not aware of Fred's death in 1914.
