Elizabeth

Thanks for your prompt reply to my message.

I visited Australia with my husband and daughter 5 years ago and we spent about 3 weeks in the Melbourne area, although I did not realise at the time that some of my family members had emigrated to Victoria so long ago. It is certainly a very beautiful state and I enjoyed Melbourne very much, but I do think those people were very brave to emigrate so far in those days, knowing that they would in all likelihood never see the families they left behind again, nor knowing whether or not things would work out for them when they got there !

A little more information on Joshua and Ann for your website : Joshua was the son of Joshua Liddle and Mary Coulson who married at Ninebanks, Northumberland 27 November 1830. There were four other sons : John (born 1831), William (born 1833), Joseph (born 1843) and Thomas (born 1846). The father died sometime before 1851 and the mother remarried to a man named Thomas Spotswood.

I was doing some browsing on the Victoria BMD Index website and noticed that Joshua's brother Joseph Liddle ALSO went to Australia with him - his death is indexed in 1910 (#3965) and he must have married and had children there too. Ann Parker was the daughter of Joseph Parker (not James) and Margaret Parker (she was Joseph's cousin). Margaret died in September 1842 aged 30 following the birth of her youngest child. Ann had two brothers : John (1835-1896) was a farmer at Allendale and a Methodist preacher. Nicholas (1837-1900) was a lead and silver refiner and was sent to India in the late 1860s to help set up a refinery there. However, the project was a failure and he returned to the UK via the newly opened Suez Canal in 1870. He and his wife Jane lost their three eldest children on the voyage back (they died at sea). Later, Nicholas was a newsagent in county Durham. The youngest child was Margaret, born 1842 and I think she died very young. Ann's father Joseph remarried in 1844 and had 8 more children with his second wife, one of whom was my great-great-grandfather.

Do you have any contact with Joshua and Ann's descendants? It would be interesting to know if they still have any photographs or correspondence in their possession. I had a letter from a cousin this morning saying that another relative had spoken of a letter from Old Man Liddle in Australia dated 1920 which spoke of two grandsons in WW1, so the two families must have maintained contact until at least the time of Joshua's death in 1924. Would it be at all possible to ask you for a scanned image of the details in the front of the Liddle Bible ? It would be most interesting to see it, but I understand if it is not possible.

Thanks again for your time and congratulations on your marvellous website - it really is a mine of information !

Karen
