Hi Elizabeth Fantastic web page, thank you for sharing your hard work on Australia’s pioneering families with all of us!
My grandfather seems to be missing from your list of Ladd children. His name is Walter Henry Ladd, born 1908 to Joseph Fredrick Ladd and Mary Ellen Hume in Warracknabeal. His siblings were Ada, Evelyn, Joseph, Allan and Gilbert.
I have also found info that Mary may have indeed been Margaret Hume....I’m not certain on that yet, still researching.
If I can be of any help to you in the future, please feel free to contact me.
Kind regards, Tarn Rainey
Gilbert James Ladd son of Frederick Jo Ladd and Mary Ellen BELL 1906 - 1971 #9037 aged 65 died at Mildura
Alexander George LADD Unknown UNKNOWN 1905 - 1966 #20653 aged 61 died at Ararat - looks like his age was overstated a bit
Kathleen Elaine Ladd daughter of Gilbert Jas Ladd and Mary BUCKLAND died at KEW 1950 #9900, aged 9 years
and his wife May Ladd dau of Maude and unknown Buckland died at SUNN, 1917 - 1971 #8459 aged 54 (There is a Maud Buckland who had a son Arthur Buckland 1898 #25414 at Coburg.
I also found the death Notice for Joseph Fred Ladd in the Argus for Thursday 24 May 1945, he was buried at Ballarat New Cemetery. The list of children included John
And Tarn wrote on Thursday, 12 August, 2010
From my understanding yes Allan did pass away as a child, my father told me he was bitten by a Mallee Mouse spider, of course I can’t be sure how accurate that is. I also don’t have any record of my grandfather’s (Walter) birth, but I do have his marriage cert and death cert. Joseph Fredrick’s parents were Edward Ladd 1839-1905 (Kent, England) and Mary Rumley 1837-1916 (Wye, England). I have the details for Mary Rumleys parent but am so far having trouble with the Ladd side, being Edwards parents. The only info I have is sketchy and lists his father as Baton (?) Ladd possibly from Maidstone, England.

and on Friday, 13 August, 2010
I have been able to uncover a birth registration for Walter Henry, 1908, Warracknabeal. Interestingly his mother is registered as Margaret Ellen Hume (not Mary as is with the other children, I also have more info on this subject). I had Walters birth year at 1908 going by his marriage certificate, his death certificate was registered by my father (Allan Raymond) who unfortunately didn’t know Walters exact year of birth, we can now confirm by his birth registration that it was indeed 1908.

Thomas Ladd

From on Thursday, 7 January, 2010

Hi Elizabeth, Came across your Ladd page & thought I should check with you - are you sure you have the right Thomas Ladd who married Ann Fulham/s? Just that he is buried with a Maria (Ann?) Ladd nee Price (died 1862 age 44), indicating that she is likely his wife?

ANSWER
Thankyou for this - now I have found at least 3 deaths of Thamas Ladd born around 1820 - 1830.
Thomas Ladd wed Dec quarter 1845 to Maria Ann Price in district of Shoreditch, which spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex, UK
Victoria records show death of Maria Ladd from London c1818 - 1862 #3346 aged 44, dau of Ann and George Price.
Maria Ladd (only passenger with that surname) aged 37 came Jul 1856 as Unassisted Passenger on the Mooresfort which brought 32 passengers - 6 family groups with 7 chn under 16, 5 single men and 10 single women, with Maria is the second oldest woman in the list. The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848-1954) Tuesday 1 July 1856 Page 4, Shipping Intelligence - June 30 - arrivals at Port Phillip Heads - Mooresfort, ship, from London. Also has heading 'Later English Intelligence' and comment 'By the arrival of the Mooresfort we have nine days later news from England'. Then follows quotes from 'Electric Telegraph'.
Arrival is reported Sat 5 July - On 4 July, Mooresfort, ship, 1220 tons, E Coulthurst, from London 14 April, Passengers Miss Steer, Miss M Goldsworthy, Messrs John Evison, CP Richards; and 22 in the steerage. The Imports she carried is listed. Agents Meyer and Co.

Govt Gazette beginning Fri 20 July, 1888 - Page 2393 - Thomas Ladd, Deceased. Creditors and others having claims against the estate of Thomas Ladd late of Talbot in the Colony of Victoria, send particulars to Edward Wells and Edwin Percy Dowding, the executors of the will, on or before 13 Aug 1888. Dated 16 July 1888, Matthews and Herring, Talbot, proctors for the said executors.

The Thomas Ladd who died at Talbot does not appear to be the husband of Ann, who had children born at Melbourne and Geelong.
The Thomas Ladd who died 1888 at Talbot left a Will and his executors are Edward Wells and Edwin Percy Dowding. BUT the Internet gave me the wrong Will. So tried another way - by identifying the executors.

The only shipping match appears to be Edward Wells aged 36 came Jan 1865 on the Albion
Edward Evans Wells born about 1828 in Greenwich, wed 1870 #3298 to Marian Beasley born in London.
They register 4 children, 1st and 4th at Talbot, other 2 at Amherst
The First Executor was in 1888 aged about 60. Finding Edwin Percy Dowding in Shipping
The Countess Of Elgin came Feb 1858 with Edwin P Dowding aged 2 years - in a family group headed by Walter V Dowding 42, and Isabel Dowding 33, with Isabel Dowding 11, Julia Dowding 10, Walter S Dowding 9, Louisa Dowding 7, Florence Dowding 5 and Edwin P Dowding 2.
Two children die, parents names appear to be Walter Scott Dowding and Isabel Bracher
Back to freeBMD -
Marriages Mar 1843 - Walter Scott Dowding and Isabel Bracher at St George in the East Vol 2 page 29. The district St George in the East spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex.
Birth of Edwin Percy Dowding was registered Births Jun 1855, in the district Stepney spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex
Edwin Percy Dowding from London wed 1883 #3907 to Bridget Cecilia Bourke, can not see any births, Edwin Percy still voting in 1924.
My point - this executor was aged about 32. Neither executor appears to be a family member.

From on Saturday, 19 March, 2011,

Hello Found your web page a lot of confusion between the Ladd Families, Thomas Joseph Ladd (1824-1896) my husband’s G/G Grandfather came form Chatham in Kent his Parents were William Ladd and Betsy Lockwood.

Thomas was a crew member aboard Velox – stayed in Victoria became a Storeman and had his own carrier business they were in Flemington/ Richmond area most of their sons were Wool classer’s.

Thomas married Mary Ann “Annie” Fulham a young Irish girl at Cape of Good Hope – they were aboard “Velox” in 1852. I have all the family history an Aunt of my husband’s who was a family historian had all the Documentation and wrote a book. All Our Ladd’s came from Chatham were Lawyers and Solicitor’s in Kent. Thomas & Annie’s son Thomas Joseph William Henry married Jane Agnes “ Jenny” Shaw.

Their son Alexander “Alec” was my husband’s grandfather and his older brother Thomas married Jessie Bartlett then left for New Zealand re-married (Still married to Jessie and was later charged with Bigamy) his son was the famous/infamous New Zealand’s-Captain Fred Ladd whom we had a lot to do with during his life and much has been written about him. My Husbands Father was Lloyd Alexander “Reg” Ladd.

Hope this clears a bit of the confusion if I can help further I have all the details and was passed the family history to carry on with....Possible that the two families were linked but so far have not found that. Best wishes –Robyn Ladd
Anne Fulham is shown as a passenger on the Velox, arrived Oct 1852. Unassisted Shipping lists 30 passengers when she arrived at Melbourne.
Velox (brig), 142 tons Cape Town (1852 Sep 1) Melbourne (1852 Oct 12)
She appears to be a brig, 142 tons, Captain JS Were, arrived Sydney 6 Nov from Melbourne 31 Oct, with 6 Cabin and 38 Steerage passengers

There is a Thomas Ladd who died at Melbourne Hospital and death registered 1896 #10529 aged 72, parents not known.
And this third death is not indexed. Thomas Ladd died 4 Aug 1898 and his Will is listed and this time I got his documents using Thomas Ladd - left a widow Annie, was a Storeman. He owned a piece of land in Geelong worth 20 pounds. Will was signed 19 Jan 1882 and he left everything ho his wife Annie. No other details. This seems to match to Thomas Ladd and Ann Fulham.

Hi Elizabeth,
Thomas Ladd & Jane Agnes (nee Shaw) had 3 more children here in NSW, JANE AGNES SUTHERLAND SHAW LADD b. 1884/11316 Waterloo NSW, NELLIE I LADD b. 1887/11288 Redfern NSW, and there is a death of a HORATIO B. LADD (no birth) d. 1883/4615 Waterloo NSW.
I've not found a death for your Thomas J W H Ladd, but Jane Agnes Ladd married again in 1894 at North Sydney, CHARLES WOOLLAMS.
Charles and Jane had 2 sons CHARLES (1889) & SYDNEY (1891) these 2 births are registered in the name of Woollams and a daughter ZORA W LADD birth registered 1892/28344 Paddington, at this time Charles was married to Jane Pendleton nee Cook, she died in 1893 so this left Jane Agnes Ladd free to marry, I assume.
JANE AGNES SHAW was born 15th June 1858 in High Church, Glasgow Lanark Scotland, and died 1939 in North Sydney NSW. Her parents were JAMES SHAW (1821-1901) and JANET WALLACE (1825-1884) they married 14th June 1845 in the Church of Scotland Church, in Old Kilpatrick, Dumbarton, Scotland and they both died in New Zealand.
Hope this helps to fill in some gaps
I'm still trying to find out what happen to Thomas Ladd. The gap has been reduced, somewhere between 1886/7 to 1888/89

Hi Elizabeth, My name is Jane Oliver.
I saw your web page of the family history of Ladd's and wondering whether they are part of my family line.
A William Henry Ladd is my great grand-father. He married Annie Catherine Lena Hedley, from Bendigo around 1921. They had two children- Gloria Vena Kathleen Ladd b. 20 Mar 1922, and William Hedley Ladd b. 6 Nov 1924.
My grandmother (Gloria) told me that William Ladd's family had a hotel in Talbot, Victoria. He was an ANZAC and after his service he was given some land at Wangaratta and became a dairy farmer.
Looking forward to your reply. Kind Regards, Jane.
