Hi Elizabeth,
Thanks for your information on James Henry Lumsden, who married Sarah Dorothy Perkins - their daughter Elizabeth Lumsden married Charles Gregson and their daughter Violet Gregson was my Grandmother.
I have recently become aware of our three convict ancestors and am greatly interested to learn more, particularly where they are buried, and if there is a memorial on their graves.
Our family (Bowers) recently went to Charlton to scatter our Mother's ashes (Emily Kirk) and found our Great Grandfather's grave in the Charlton cemetery with no memorial. We then went to Amherst/Talbot Cemetery and found our Great Grandmother's grave with no memorial (although evidence of an old burnt wooden memorial). We are presently having a memorial made for Isabella Kennedy Kirk and will then arrange a memorial for William Kirk.
On the Lumsden-Perkins-Gregson side we are 5th generation and in absolute awe that they arrived in Australia in 1833/1834. We are delighted to have details of their arrivals and would like to know if there are graves/memorials, if not could we assist in some way.
Kind regards, Jan Davey
Thankyou for writing.
The Vestral had arrived 20 July with 80 passengers, and on 8 August the Courier reported 'all the young females by the Vestral, we are happy to say, have obtained respectable employment in families, and we have several applications from the country which remain yet unsupplied. 250 free females are daily expected.'
Sarah Perkins came on the Strathfieldsay barque, 478 tons, Capt Jones, from Gravesend 1 May and arrived at Hobart 13 Aug 1834, with a general cargo of merchandise and 286 free female immigrants - see Hobart Town Courier 15 Aug 1834. Also references MB2/39/1/2 P109.
