James Littlejohn

From Tony - Births of James Littlejohn in Scotland - I have just found his baptism – 24 Jan 1811.
There was another James 1802, but the one above has a father who is a flax dresser, from Arbroath, so fits the Convict description! and his Mother is Elizabeth Petrie!

From on Thursday, 18 June 2015
Hi Elizabeth, I came across your website today while I was updating some information about James Littlejohn.
My 3x grandmother was Mary Jane Gergison B 17 Apr 1838 in Banbridge County Down Ireland. Her father was a war pensioner named George Gergison who brought his family to Port Cygnet on the Lady Kennaway in 1851. (They appear in a book on the area called “ Port Cygnet 1792-1860 A history of Tasmania” Vol 1 by David Coad).
Mary Jane Gergison married James Littlejohn on 14 Feb 1855 in Hobart (Reg No.447 Tasmanian Marriages 1803-1899). He is aged 36 and a boat builder. This record makes him born 1819. She was 17 years old at the time. See attached record.
Mary left John. She married George Childs in NSW, but they appear to have met in Tasmania or Victoria. I am still trying to sort some of that out. They told people they married in Geelong in 1855, but then married in Sydney 1869. They had 5 children by then (their eldest child George was born in 1860 in Armidale). He was a police constable. She married as Mary Little a widow.
My records of James has him marrying Margaret Kerns on 22 Nov 1862 at Franklin Huon, Tasmania. He was listed as widowed, born 1822 and the bride was 25 born 1837.
So my big question – were there two James Littlejohn’s based upon the age differences between the “convict” born 1811 and the younger, or did he make himself younger to marry Mary?
Kind Regards, Tony Paul
I used Google for 'convicts of Tasmania' then in the search used Name and Littlejohn, I expect you have used the same search process. It looks like one convict, James.
I have checked out the marriages you found, and the two marriages, then James' death aged 84 in 1894 giving a birth year 1811. So if daughter Jane was correct he was aged 44 in 1855 and 52 in 1862 when he married Margaret. He said he was 40 in 1862 and so had dropped 15 years.
I can not see a death for either wife. As you say, Mary left him. Looks like he was 'loose with the truth' and she got tired of him.
Hi Elizabeth, Mary Childs died in Sydney on 2 Dec 1918. (NSW BDM 14612/1918)
On her death certificate it says she was in Tasmania for 15 years, and NSW for 60 years. It says her father was George Gergison and Mary Murphy. It also claims she married at Port Cygnet aged 20 yrs to George Childs – so the cover up continued all her life.
They arrived in 1851 on the Lady Kennaway, so 15 years after is 1866, when she supposedly left Tasmania. But by 1866 she had already given birth to FOUR of her children in NSW, son George in 1860 in Armidale. So it seems there was a lot of muddy waters.
The big difference in the ages seems like a possible reason for the runner. She was 17yrs when married and he would have been 44 as you say.
Anyway, It does add a lot more to my records, and I think I need to keep digging to find out where and when she left Tasmania. Kind Regards, Tony
James Littlejohn is shown as aged 20 when he arrived as a convict in 1830, described as 4'10", fair complexion, aged 20, a flax worker from Arbroath and got his Pardom in 1844, then aged 34.
James Littlejohn, a bachelor aged 36, wed 14 Feb 1855 to Mary Jane Gergison aged 17, at St Mary's church, Frankstin, Huon River, Tasmania.
James Littlejohn, a widower aged 40, wed 22 Nov 1862 to Margaret Kerns aged 25, a spinster who made X her mark, at St Mary's church, Frankstin, Huon River, Tasmania.
The family has the dates - born 24 Jan 1811 and died 12 Feb 1894 aged 83 for James Littlejohn.

James Littlejohn 1811 - 1894 aged 83, went to Tasmania as a convict, tried in Perth Scotland for stealing and convicted 14 Dec 1829, sentenced to 14 years transportation, arrived in Hobart 26 July 1830 on the third voyage of the Sir Charles Forbes which left Plymouth 5 Apr 1830 with 160 male convicts (two died during the voyage), and in 1844 he received his full pardon. He married Margaret Kearns born 1837, the daughter of John Kearns, who was also a convict for a time, in Tasmania. James Littlejohn became a boat builder on the Huon River, at Franklin, Tasmania.
On 13 Sep 1881 his daughter Elizabeth Littlejohn 1861 - 1941, wed Frank Austin and had 9 children. She died at her son John's home in Dover on 29 Dec 1941.

DavChc@aol.com Hi Elizabeth I was researching the Catamoles and their connection to the Lloyds and came across your geocities web site. I am sorry to put the cat among the pidgeons but-
The James Lloyd you have marrying Eliza Catamole is not the right one. The James you have, died in 1860 Melbourne. The correct James does not have a birth registration but his death in 1920 puts his birth c 1857, his parents as Frederick Lloyd and Jane Gray, and he is buried beside his married daughter, Daisy Jane Cairns in Camperdown Cemetery.
Hope this doesn't create to many problems for you. Regards David.

The Marian Moore is a fine new clipper ship, of the Liverpool build, belonging to Charles Moore and Co., of that place, (the owners also of the ship Koh-l-Noor, which arrived on Saturday.) Her maiden trip has been performed in ninty days, and she has proved herself well qualified for the purpose for which she has been taken up, viz., the conveyance of Government emigrants, of whom she has on board five hundred and one, all apparently in good health, which may be attributed, in a great measure, to the cleanly state of the ship. Eleven births took place on the passage, and nineteen deaths; of which three were adults, seven children and nine infants, from general causes.
