Ref. JOSEPH LISHMAN md MARY ANN HEARD
MARY ANN HEARD d/o Thomas Head & Mary Ann (Hockridge) was not the first wife of Lawrence Cleverdon Mountjoy. That Mary Ann Heard was the daughter of John Heard, blacksmith. & mother Mary, bp 10/6/1827 Morwenstow. I don't know if she is related to Thomas Heard's family - he has a brother John born C. 1804.
The other Mary Ann Heard who married Lawrence Clevedon Mountjoy died in South Australia, apparently either going to or from her brother-in-laws wedding and was buried on the side of the road in an unmarked grave. How very sad.
Regards, Sue

One Pound Reward given on restoration to William Littledale, storekeeper, Simpson's Road. 1J1 The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1956) Tuesday 5 September 1865, Page 5 At the Fitzroy Police Court yesterday William Littledale, a farmer residing at Anderson's Creek, was charged with assaulting Martin Dooly, the keeper of the Merri Creek toll-bar, on the Heidelberg-road, and his sister, Ellen Martin; and also with evading payment of toll. The defendant was drlving home, after visiting the Melbourne market on Saturday morning, and on going through tbe toll-bar Dooly demanded toll from him. Littledale replied that he had passed through the bar and paid toll on the same morning on his way to Melbourne, and was entitled to return free. Plaintiff denied that he had gone through the bar that morning, and he and his sister attempted to detain the defendant's horse and cart, whereupon a scuffle ensued, in the course of which the alleged assault was committed. Mr. Edward; who appeared for the defendant, called witnesses to prove that his client went through the bar on the same morning, and that the plaintiffs demand, which led to the assault was therefore an illegal one. He also submittcd that, as the defendant was accustomed to pass through the bar every week, and was well-known to the plaintiff, the latter had no right to attempt to detain his horse and cart under any circumstances, but should have allowed him to proceed on his journey, and taken out a summons against him, If he believed that he had evaded payment of the toll. The magistrates dismissed the case
