Elizabeth,
I am preparing a history of the Kenchington or Kinchington family, originally of Hampshire, England, from the 17th century through to the early 20th. To date, I have about a thousand individuals listed, with much information drawn from the British records. I am, however, weak on those members of the family who emigrated. I do have something of the tale of George and Flora Kinchington, who went to New South Wales in about 1836 and then settled in Yackandandah, Victoria but most of what I know of them comes from an unsigned family tree posted on the web -- and I am not confident of the reliability of that source.
I came across your web site featuring Australian pioneers which includes a listing of the same family. However, you have a somewhat different list of children's names, with different birth dates where you do agree on names. Could you please tell me what sources you used in compiling your information and whether I should take your version as definitive, rejecting the tree as incorrect?
Do you have any further information on this Kinchington family? Thanking you in advance,
Trevor Kenchington

The Victorian Index is listed after my reconstruction notes.
Source of history notes Yackandandah, also listed in Settlers of the Upper Murray,
From Forum discussion Five Kinchington's served in WWI, with perhaps the most well known being Patrick, who served with the 3rd Btn, and was awarded the MM.
George Kinchington and his wife came overland from Sydney, crossed the Murray River and camped on Yackandandah Creek, near its junction with the Kiewa River (east of the townsite). They then established the Thirlingananga station
Thomas Kenchinton c1775 wed 28 Nov 1801 to Susanna Tiller born About 1780 both of Damerham, Wiltshire, England
George Kensington 1807 - 1889 son of Susan Tiller and Thomas Kinchington, wed 13 Dec 1828 at South Damerham, Hampshire, England to Flora Lewis and 3 sons were born in Damerham, Wiltshire, England

George Kinchington departed London, England and came to Sydney 29 June 1834 on the James with Flora Lewis 1808 - 1856 #1744 aged 48 died at Williamstown, lived at first in Yass NSW where James was born, then came overland to Victoria, Williamstown then Yackandanda

Kinchington Tree is great , thank you. I am related to the Ellenia Connor. (Trying to get details on her sister Margaret who was my GGrandmother) she married a James Clarke, but have never been able to find the marriage or her death or burial..
I appreciate the effort you have put into this Tree. Ellen Qld.
Searching NSW online index of BMD is difficult - they do not include mother's surnames. It makes working backwards from the known more complicated.

I have been doing a bit of research into my family back ground as my father died when I was a baby. George married a number of times.
Evaline married John Griffin, a School teacher at Stanley South East of Beechworth Victoria moving to Dargo in the High Country of Gippsland and then to Darnum in Gippsland. He died after having his legs cut off in a train shunting accident. Each of the male children died very painful deaths and this put down as a curse on the Vandeleur family descendancy. Of the descendants of that branch I think that I am the only one who is still alive. I have been given a loan of a book "Myrtleford Gateway to the alps" by Kay Robertson (Published 1973 - Rigby Limited. ISBN 0 85179 4726) It has a great amount of information on the district. I have only just started to read it.

From Vic Gov Hansard date 22 Nov 2001, Book 9, page 1305, Council
by Hon G B Ashman (Koonung) In 1840 George Kinchington, who arrived in Australia from England 1834, moved in 1840 to north-eastern Victoria and commenced work on a grazing property called Bungowannah just outside Albury. In the late 1840s they moved to Melbourne and were instrumental in constructing the flour mill at Dights Falls. The mill was restored in the 1990s but again needs rubbish removed. Matter raised by Mr Campbell, a descendant of George Kinchington.
From Trevor on Wed, 22 Nov 2006
Elizabeth, I am still trying to make sense of the Yackandandah Kinchingtons but I wanted to let you know immediately that you have given me a whole other twist to the story.
I already knew that Ambrose had found his way to Melbourne and died there in 1864. I did not know that he had married (it seemed more likely that he was just a deepwater sailor passing through) and you have given me records of his and Mary Darlington's children -- which is great. What is really interesting is that after he died, she had two "Kinchington" children (in 1867 and 1869) to whom she gave the middle name "Boyd". In 1870, she finally married James Boyd.
Since her sons by Ambrose all died young, it looks like any Kinchingtons descended from that Melbourne family are not Kinchingtons at all, genetically!
To make this more interesting still, I have had one correspondent refuse to tell me about the Kinchingtons in his family tree, on the grounds that it was only an assumed name dating from the 19th Century. I have no idea why anyone would assume such an unusual name and one with no prestige (until well into the 20th Century). There was even a Kenchington locked away in the British asylum for the criminally insane, so it was a name to leave behind, not one to adopt. I am now wondering whether the "assumed name" was actually a matter of the Boyd children living under their mother's maiden name.
I know that this is all rather far from your own genealogical interests but I wanted to let you know how valuable the information you sent has been!
Thank you!! Trevor
