The First Joseph Kellow, servant

Subject: ST. ENDELLION - Chapple
Hi !
Just surfing for Chapple's in St. Endellion. My gr gr grandparents were Digory Gray & Elizabeth Guy of Trevatghan, m St. Endellion, Cornwall. As you note on the Census, some of their servants/staff were members of the Kellow family. Although I am not related to the Kellow family, just thought I'd get in touch any way.

Sad to say that 2 of the sons of Digory & Elizabeth Guy died in their youth, another son lived to a ripe old age and died in Devonshire, their only daughter Joan Gray [my gr grandmother] married John Chapple, son of the Governor of Bodmin Gaol. Shortly after John received his degree as an Architect he and wife Joan sailed in 1855 to Canada and settled in Ontario where they raised a fine family. John eventually became a Magistrate of a large territory here in Ontario, Canada.

You describe THREE different men named Joseph Kellow.

I have been sent some of the information from your webpage about the Kellows. The person who sent me the information has done very little on the family as far as I can see, and has got a bit confused with varying families she has seen online. She has asked me to comment on the discrepancies.
I am presuming that you thought the Henry and Joseph Kellow who were with the Digory Gray family in 1841 were not only the lads that came to Australia in 1852, but as you have a census record of Kellows for 1851 following the 1841, I guess you thought that Joseph was the same one who sailed with Henry in 1852.

Yes, Helen, I plead 'Guilty'

I regret to tell you they are different families. I am not disputing the two who came to Australia in 1852 and the following family tree for that Joseph, but the 1851 family came from Gwennap in the 1841 census to Latchley in the 1851 census, and neither village is anywhere near St Endellion where the Digory family lived.

The 1851 census record is for my 2xgt-grandparents James and Bridget Kellow - their eldest son James was not living with them then, their Joseph married in the UK and went to New Zealand, and George, my gt-grandfather, emigrated to Australia with his wife and a daughter in 1854.
To save any further confusion, I guess you would be happy to remove the 1851 census record from your page as it will confuse Kellow researchers - as it obviously has done!
