I have just found your site and I am ecstatic to have resolved what was a major problem for me with my genealogy research.
My wife is a Moss and I had traced her family back to 1800 in Occold in Suffolk where a John Moss married a Sophia. I knew from the 1841 census etc that he had a niece living with him - Lucy Howlett born 1825 in Wolverstone or Holbrook Suffolk.
After much consulting of records - it seemed that every mention of John Moss was eother obscured by an ink blot or some other impediment - I concluded he was married to Sophia Sheldrake but where did the Howlett niece come from. I suddenly found upon Lazarus Howlett marrying Lucy Sheldrake in 1823 in Freston, Suffolk and things became a bit clearer.
Today I had a feeling he might have been transported leaving his baby daughter with his sister Sophia and..... You proved it all for me. All for stealing a shaving brush!!!

And on Wednesday, 25 February, 2009
Thank you for the clues! I have just checked through the records and Lucy Sheldrake wed on 26-12-1834 to Thomas Woollard in Tattingstone.
They had 9 children - 3 dying in infancy - and among them was Lucy Woollard born in 1836.
My guess is that she had to leave her family from the Lazarus Howlett marriage and 9 year old Lucy went to live with her mother's sister. 11 year old Richard must have made his own life - interesting to know where he spent his younger years - maybe the poorhouse?? And 7 year old John vanishes.

Elizabeth Yes you are right I am "on the ground". I have just moved up to Suffolk and live just outside Ipswich. About 10 minutes drive from the Holbrook / Woolverstone area where this family saga originates!
My main line of interest is the MOSS family - my wife is a MOSS. I traced John back to Occold and went round the church there to see if there was any evidence of the family but alas no. I followed them down to Barham and again found no physical graves etc. However the Suffolk records Office is just outside Ipswich and I have spent several days there going through the parish records.
That was where I found the Sophia Sheldrake John Moss marriage. It was also where I found a lot of the baptisms. A search of the burial records did not show the children as dying in infancy - agree that is unusual at that time.
Freston is another little village along the river Deben a few minutes from Wolverstone - It is the home of one of Suffolk's most notorious 19th century "rogues" - Margaret Catchpole - her exploits are legendary in these parts!
I can see the issue with the 2 children named Lucy although I still believe this to be some way of the mother showing some "remembrance" of her first daughter Lucy (with Lazarus) whom she had to give up to her sister. I guess that is a little story we shall never really know the answer to.
Hope there is a semblance of assistance here
best regards, Paul

I got confused when Marie called him 'Richard Howlett Sheldrake' and I had him with those names reversed. Now notice he was about 8 months old when Lucy wed Lazarus Howlett.
So I hit IGI for some entries. Unfortunately for certainty, most are submitted after 1991, and the source is not shown, so the Sheldrake story may just be true.
Paul, you are the 'man on the ground' if I understand correctly that you live in UK. Do we have a pair of parents who were very successful, and did raise most of the children born to them, in the days before Smallpox was tamed?

phadgraft@optushome.com.au Thankyou, Elizabeth, for replying to my email and for giving me the other sites to look at.
On your site the information that was posted by Ms Tanner? had some mistakes in Sarah's name.
Her surname was Copley and where she was married was Sorrell which is a place in Tasmania.
I have attached where I found this information. I was also sent some typewritten information from a relative that had Sorrell as the place where they were married.
I'm just sending it on so you can update your site which gave me the names of all their children, which was wonderful.

I have found a site that lists Lazarus's Parents (and brothers and sisters) which you may wish to add to Lazarus's page. It is John Howlett and Mary Cook, by Paula Hadgraft
There are quite a few James and William's and they all seem to come from Suffolk so they may be related to your William.

To quote Paula Hadgraft

Hello Elizabeth,
I saw your notes on the Lazarus Howlett family, and I am the Marie Tanner who entered the details on the first families database, along with Denis Howlett, whose details are almost identical. I dont know where the Sorell Copeland came from, as I didnt put it in my entry. Could this be deleted as Lazarus wife was Sarah Copley, not Sorell or Copeland. Sarah was christened as Sarah Cobley, on April 13, 1815, Publow, Somerset, daughter of Joseph and Harriot Cobley. Lazarus and Sarahs daughter Jane was my Gt Grandmother. When Sarah and her sister Mary were sent to Tasmania, they arrived as Copleys, perhaps wanting to start a new life with a different name.
You have done a lot of research with your genealogy, haven't read through the 8 pages yet, will let you know if there is anything else to be added.
Regards from Marie Tanner,

Dear Elizabeth,
Have ‘stumbled’ across your informative web-site whilst researching Thomas Wm. Howlett who married my gr.grandmother in 1874. It is stated that there are no records regarding children or her death.
There were 2 children born to them …. Thomas Murray in 1875 …… he died near Wentworth, NSW in 1877 ….and Chowilla Horace (known as Horace) in 1876 at Chowilla, near Renmark in South Australia. Annie died this same day as his birth. Her record was difficult to locate but was finally ‘found’ under the name ‘Hewlett’, in the South Australian records.
After the death of Annie, Thos. Wm. And his 2 sons were returning to Victoria when Murray died.
He remarried in 1882 to Mary Jane Newey who died in 1922, Elmhurst, Vic.
Chowilla Horace Howlett wed in 1903 to Amelia Rose Leach. He died in Ararat, Vic. In 1960.
It was the 2nd marriage for Annie Tegart (nee Trinder) It is recorded that she was widowed in 1865 but this is not really what happened. John Tegart was still alive …. it appears he deserted Annie …. and had started another family in the Sale, Vic. Area.
Both Annie and Thomas were working at Tottington Station, near St.Arnaud, at the time they married. They obviously moved to Chowilla (Renmark) quite soon after their marriage at the Christ Church of England, St. Arnaud (1/1/1874)
Annie Trinder was born at Dover, Kent in 1833. We know that her mother Elizabeth Trinder (Elizabeth Scott) aged 50 and a sister, Catherine Trinder aged 27, came out on the Fortitude on June 1852. Nothing on her father, Thomas Trinder.
John Tegart (Taggett/Taggart/Tagart/Tagorth) came out on the Reliance, arrived 19 March 1850, ship, 738 tons, EE Osborne Commander, from Plymouth 9 Dec, with 5 Cabin and 306 Steerage passengers, John Day Esq., MD Surgeon Superintendent, MA Smith and Co, Agents. She brings 38 married women, 82 single females, 39 married and 85 single males, 36 chn 7 - 14, 19 aged 1-7 and 9 under a year. The pArgus reports 6 deaths and 1 birth during the voyage. See the Reliance passenger list in NSW records.
Hope this is of some value to you.

Hi Elizabeth, I see that you have updated your Howlett web site with James Robinson and Mary Ann Howlett's information . . . thank you very much for that.
However, James Robinson's birth year is 1840 - he was born in Hobart Town Tasmania to Benjamin Charles Robinson and Mary Martha Atkinson. I believe that Benjamin was the convict sent to Tasmania in 1836 on board the Henry Porcher. We have eliminated all the other Benjamin Robinsons.
Many thanks again for your wonderful web site - which has enabled me to find David Robinson and Grt Grandfather James Robinson's parents.
I don't know if you are interested in all the ancestors and descendents of the William Howlett b. 1813 Woolpit Suffolk and Frances Warren b. 1815 in Earl Stoneham Suffolk England, who immigrated to Australia on the ship Blanche in 1852. I have all the Howlett ancestors right back to James Howlett b. 1652 in Woolpit Suffolk and his wife Elizabeth. I have also managed to trace many of the descendents born here in Australia from their children.
I have my family tree on the Genes Reunited site and could export it for you if you are interested!
Regards Jenny

The information I have about the Atkinson family all came from David Robinson.
They apparently immigrated to Tasmania on the Barge Lochiel - departed Leith 13th April 1833 sh: 204, arrived Hobart Town 17th Sept in 1833 sh: 204. They were originally from Edinburgh Scotland. I shall include the Ships passenger list that David sent me. As you can see the spelling of their name was slightly different (Aitkinson).
Hobart Shipping Arrivals 1833 - Ellen Aitchison, John Aitchison & Mrs & chn, James Aitkins, William Aitkinson, Charlotte Aitkinson, Sarah Aitkinson, Jane Aitkinson, James Aitkinson, Mary Aitkinson, and Edward Aitkinson

Hello Just writing to say I have found your site very informative and helpful in finding my ancestors.
I am sure you have realised already that the daughters of William Thomas and Frances Elizabeth Howlett, namely Mary Ann and Ann Maria married brothers James and Edward, sons of Benjamin Robinson and Mary Robinson (nee Atkinson).
3. Mary Ann Howlett 1846 - 1874 #4507 aged 28, wed 1863 to James Robinson
5. Ann Maria Howlett 1855 #5587 wed 1875 #2200 to Edward Robinson
James after the death of Mary Ann in 1874 remarried in 1875 to Ellender Bruce also 28 years of age at the time of her marriage to James. I have been unable to trace them after their marriage.
I have been unable however to go further back than Benjamin whom I believe was born in 1813 in ?Birmingham Warwickshire and I believe transported to Tasmania in 1836.
kind regards, David Robinson

Hello
Further to your enquiry regarding Mary Martha Atkinson, Mary I believe was born in Edinburgh 1821 to James Atkinson (?aka John) and Jane Draffin (? Draffen).
They immigrated to Tasmania as a family in 1836 aboard the Barqe Lochiel 13/04/1833 arriving 17/09/1833.
Mary was one of 8 siblings. I regret however I have been unable to find to date any records of birth or marriage for the family in Scotland.
I hope this is of some assistance to you.
regards
David

Tasmanian records are great - when I find what I want. This time the "Permission to Marry' rules seem to have lapsed before Ann Atkinson wed Benjamin Robinson, which is a pity in the effort to clarify ancestry.
