From on Wed, 13 Sep 2006
Elizabeth,
After leaving New Zealand and before coming to Victoria, John and Anna Harris went to Tasmania, where they had a son and a daughter. They already had a daughter (from whom I’m descended) born in Worcestershire.
Have you any more information about their forebears?

Just a small correction – regarding John Spencer Harris, who was the store-keeper at Queenstown (which is now St Andrews). This is not Queenscliffe..and not near Dunolly. It is near Hurstbridge (where I live). They had a property not far from me. His first born (and only son) is buried in the cemetery there. It is still listed as the Queenstown cemetery, and although in a remote area, is quite accessible.
The store was purchased from Johanna Tavener. It had a house, gardens, Stables, outhouses and slaughter houses. The price was 12 pounds sterling. While he had the store, he was robbed twice – one of those occasions they took nearly the entire contents of the store. This was at the Caladonian Diggings. He left there and went to Dunolly, where he is buried in the local cemetery – you can’t miss the grave….it is black marble.
