Charles came to to Australia as an unassisted immigrant on board the ship Star of Brunswick departing from Liverpool, Lancashire on the 2nd April 1864, and arriving at Melbourne in the Colony of Victoria on the 26th July 1864. The "Star of Brunswick" was under the command of Captain John Joine and carried a total of 37 passengers, the voyage lasted 115 days.

The ship Garland arrived 31 July 1852, 968 tons, William Halcrow Commander, from Liverpool Apr 26. Passengers Cabin Mrs Halcrow, WF Preshaw Esq. Surgeon Superintendent, and 364 Government emigrants in the Steerage, and imported 450 tons coal and other items - on Order.
Dr William Fisher Preshaw arrived in Castlemaine in August 1852, and from the outset the town benefited from his public spirit. He was active in initiating and establishing many much needed amenities and organisations, including the first hospital in 1853. As the town’s first health officer, Preshaw arranged smallpox vaccinations and became the district coroner.
