Hi Elizabeth,

I contacted you some months ago about your web site which lists some of my family - Charles Jewel Hearle, Caroline Louisa Hearle, James Stewart Mercer and Arthur McMillan Mercer. You were busy on your overseas trip then so I thought it best to wait until you got back before contacting you again. Hope you had a lovely time.

I am keen to exchange information. Do you have information other than that on your web site? I would love to know how you are related to the Hearle and Mercer families. Which ones are your ancestors? Arthur McMillan Mercer was my grandfather. He had another brother who isn't listed on your site, Harold Stewart, born in 1885.

Dear Elizabeth,

There is a record - HEATH CHAS 32 MAY 1847 SIR THOMAS ARBUTHNOT

Yeah I have Maria Oxley / Hawksley, and her family. Great Great Grandma. Have photo of her daughters Maria G Grandma, and Henrietta,as well, although not a great one. I have the marriage certificate, Maria and Charles, no parents listed. Her parents on her death certificate have been listed as Robert Oxley Butcher, and Susan UNK. That threw me for some while, but her kids are wrong on that cert and its the only one.
I had a professional look at it for me, and she believes that the mistakes on the cert can be attributed to her Husbands recolection on the day.
You have the Charles right at a glance, he was bought out for Stealing a couple of expensive lamps, convicted at the old Bailey and sent out under the Exile scheme. Funny as his grandchildren would end up marring into the family of Thomas Arbuthnot, so a twist of fate there.
Now my original tie into figuring out the name Hawksley was from some old research that was done by Arthur Heath. Arthur was the Son of George Heath. It seems when Maria Died in 1870, her brother Robert Hawksley became her son Georges gaurdian.
Robert, George and a John Long?? selected land at Eddington. George ended up with about 500acres up there, but moved towards Shepperton. Apparently 2 of his sons became established farmers and councillors. The research I have is not substantited, but I have done some work on it and it seems that it hasnt been proved wrong yet.
There was also a Robert Hawksley who was listed in the 185..? Australian census, in Ballarat. I intend to try and track down that line of the heath family and see if this research still exists, as would be very interested in seeing what else that they had.
Now the unassisted shipping records into Vic are only online from 1852. The Heath research suggests that Robert, the younger brother who was better educated, than his older siblings. Migrated to Adelaide in 1848, cant find that record yet. The research has Robert arriving in Adelaide, no ship name, he left with his sister Esther apparently, although they suggest she may have died at sea.
When did Maria come?? dont know, but could have even been the same time. However she was married pretty early in 1849, so not sure.
Found a Robert Hawksley(SNR) listed on the Griffiths valuation of Ireland in Shinrone, but Irish records!! cant find any more than that, was looking for message boards when I stumbled across your posting.
Anyway, nice to met someone with a connection. Oh there was another marriage from George Hawksley(snr) and Unk wife. They had 2 more children later than the first. Perhaps this is where the Oxley name came in?? But they also came to Australia. The Heath research says that they had no contact, but the step sister went to work in Eddington as a school teacher, so that cant be right.
I have the UNK parents of George Hawksley, Georges sister Francis, I believe she is the Long, and that she married a Robert Long and went to Canada with Son John as a 6 year old. But have not confirmed it as yet.
There is also some research that suggests that the Hawksleys went to Ireland?? in around 1820, now dont know if they were heading that way to pick some late wages from the round heads or Cromwell or something, Irish records being what they are.
There was a John Long came over on the Briton, in 62!! and there was a John Long Son of Robert and Frances, so there must be a tie in there as well.
Anyway, have a lot of that stuff, if you want a list of the people let me know can bang it over when I get home later, don't have it on the computer here at work.
Love to here anything that you have, that will help detail this family a little more than I already have it. Regards, Paul Barrett
