David HattThey feature briefly in Edna Arnold's book 'Tarnagulla the way it was' Page 233, Harry H Smith arrived around 1870 and resided with his nephew David Hatt until the later died. He then lived with his aunt and visited England on two occasions. Harry Smith was the Secretary and Librarian of the Wesleyan church Sunday School and a member of the local MUIOOF He died around 16 Nov 1897 aged 43 years after 27 years in the ColoniesDavid Hatt 1813 - 19 Mar 1881 #3044 aged 68 aon of Lucy and George Hatt, and his wife Margaret 1824 - 23 Jan 1902 aged 78, both died at Tarnagulla. Captain David Hatt was bringing an English barque into Poverty Bay, new Zealand when the vessel was wrecked. Captain Hatt was rescued by a young Maori woman whom he then married and both settled in Elgin St, Sandy Creek (Tarnagulla) where he formed a partnership in 1853 with Thomas King to develop what was called Poverty Reef, one of the richest gold producing mines in the area.
