George Henry Greenwood

From on Wed, 17 Nov 2004
Dear Elizabeth,
About 18 months ago we exchanged several messages about Brownbill family history, which on my side concerned by father's family - and a number of other Brownbill families, some being Australians.
This time, I am interested in another name which I have discovered on your website "Australian Pioneer Families" in the Greenwood data.
You mention a Penelope BEDFORD 1849 #7747 (1821-1867), who married George Henry GREENWOOD in Marylebone (London, England) in March 1849. You indicate her age, at marriage, as 45... but I think this should read 28 ? She could certainly not have been 45, because she continued to have children until 1858, by which time she would have been 54 years old.
You advise that her parents were Mary Ann CARVER and "Pimble" BEDFORD of London.
I rather think that the surname CARVER is a mistake, and that "Pimble" was in fact a wood-carver.
Now, I am interested in this BEDFORD family, as it could be linked with my mother's family : I have a tree for this line which goes back as follows :
Ken Birbeck (1935 - still going strong)
Audrey Phyllis Bedford (1909 -1937)
Frederick Charles Bedford (1874 - 1957)
Thomas Benjamin Bedford (1850 or 1851 - 1937)
Benjamin Bedford (ca 1804 - died ?)
Pemberton Bedford (born before 1790 - died ?)
This Pemberton Bedford (my #1) was an ornamental wood-carver in the city of London, and we think he married Mary Ann BLONDELL 24 March 1810 in St Brides, Fleet Street, London, England. They had (at least) three children :
Benjamin Bedford, my mother's great-grandfather
Pemberton Bedford (my #2) born ca 1810
Penelope Bedford born 1819. She married Henry John WEBB, then we lost track of her !
We were unable to tie down further details of this family because there were apparently several people in central London named Pemberton Bedford, and all of them seem to have been wood-carvers or joiners.
The Pemberton Bedford #2 apparently married twice :
Firstly with Elizabeth SAMUEL, marriage 26 Jan 1834 (no children ??)
Secondly with Elizabeth CRUWYS, who gave him (at least) 5 children :
Pemberton Thomas Bedford b. 16 Aug 1838
Mary Ann Bedford b. 9 Feb 1840
Elizabeth Bedford b. 1842
Penelope Bedford b. 1844
Edwin Bedford b. 1847
I have no details of the descendance of these 5 children, but you will notice the recurrence of the names Pemberton and Penelope.
My grandfather Frederick Charles Bedford was one of 9 children, (3 girls and 6 boys) and he was the only son to remain in England. His five brothers emigrated to the USA, and I am at present attempting to find out if they had descendants, because our family in England lost touch with them after WW2.
I believe that three of my grandfather's uncles, sons of Benjamin Bedford, also emigrated to the USA, but I do not know their first names, and I have not traced them so far.
In my search I have noticed elsewhere (Rootsweb.com - Louisiana Archives held at Baton Rouge) a fellow named William Pemberton Bedford DANGERFIELD age 24, who married a girl named Virginia LEE age 22 on 25 Aug 1886. I wonder if he might not be somehow related to our line?
I trust that you and your husband and family are keeping well.
My wife and I will be visiting Perth and Adelaide next February, and we are much looking forward to this trip, which will be our first to these cities (although we already know Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne).
Kindest regards, Kenneth BIRBECK

I am a direct descendant of the Greenwood line mentioned.
I have a copy of the Death registration for Penelope Greenwood, who died 1 July 1867, It listed her age as 45, nominally putting her birth between 2 July 1821 and 1 July 1822
It lists her birthplace as London. It lists her husband (George Henry Greenwood), length of Marriage 23 years (i.e. Married between 2 July 1843 and 1 July 1844) and her length of time in Victoria (Australia) as 17 years (putting her emigration July 1849 to 1850). It list two older children Annie Janet Croft Greenwood (21 at the time) Louisa Maria Greenwood (19) as well as William Henry Greenwood (17), George Henry Greenwood (15) Alfred Shippen Greenwood (13) and Emily Elizabeth Greenwood (8)
It lists her Parents as Pimbleton Bedford (a bookseller) and Mary Ann Bedford (formerly Carver).
So, Annie Matilda Greenwood was my Grandmother, George Henry Greenwood II was my Great Grandfather and Penelope Greenwood (nee Bedford) was my Great Great Grandmother. According to this document my Great Great Great grandparents were Pimbleton and Mary Ann Bedford (Carver) of London.
