Alfred HOOPER was born 15 February 1835 in Littleham near Exmouth, Devon, England, son of Michael HOOPER and Ann LLOYDE. He arrived in Victoria about 1855 and moved to the Geelong district. On the 14 January 1857 in Geelong he married Sarah BLACKWELL, daughter of Thomas BLACKWELL and Sarah PUDDLE. They had 12 children: Charles; Alfred; Mary Ann; Sarah Miranda; Eliza Louisa; Robert Michael; Mary Ann Elizabeth; Eva Georgina; Alice Martha Jane; Archibald Arthur Oliver; and David Harry Edward. Alfred died as a result of an accident when his gun discharged while duckshooting at Werribee, aged 41, on the 1 June 1876.

His eldest son Charles HOOPER born 15 January 1857 in Geelong. On the 13 December 1877 at Connewarre, he married Maria GOWTY, daughter of George GOWTY and Caroline ELDRIDGE. They soon left Geelong and moved to Snapper Point. They had seven children. Charles drowned in a boating accident with his son, Charles Frederick, when aged 35, on the 21 May 1892 at Snapper Point.

My husband Bernard and his sister Claudia are the grandchildren of *Elizabeth Emma GOWTY, daughter of Barzillai John and Alice GOWTY nee DEDMAN. *Elizabeth Emma GOWTY (1877-1940) married William CLAYFIELD (1878-1966) and had the following:

Bernard remembers fondly his trips on the train from Melbourne to Warnambool to stay with his mum's cousin George and his wife Myrtle Gowty and also all their children, Margaret, John, Judith, Dianne and later Heather at their farm. He also remembers with fondness George’s mother Agnes (Riah) who was sometimes there when he stayed as well.
