Frederick Geisler

From on Wednesday, 7 October, 2009
We spoke sometime ago about the Geisler's. You were of the opinion that, they came from Switzerland, but then you could not find your reference. I have been working of this site for a few months now: http://www.niederweisel.com/index.html web site for Anna Juliana Hubb.
If you look under the title 'the immigrant" and then under the story of Anna Juliana Haub you will find out that Frederick was from Germany too.
Very sadly, the author of the page on Anna Juliana Haub and her family, has died, we thank him for putting his work on the web.
Friederich Geisler was a widower from Alpenrod who went to Hull in UK where he joined a musical group. There he met Anna Juliana Haub dau of Katharina nee Adami and Johann Jakob Haub, whose widowed mother had brought her family from Nieder-Weisel to Hull, and the couple were married on 25th October 1855 in Bethesda Chapel, Kingston-upon-Hull. They left from Liverpool on 1st December on board the "Columbia" with other members of Anna Juliana's family, including her mother, Katharina. The group reached Melbourne on Wednesday, 18th March 1857 and made its way to Ballarat.
Friedrich continued farming until he retired; he took out letters of naturalisation in 1895.

Anna Juliana Haub, 1832-1909, was the elder of the two daughters of Katharina nee Adam and farmhand Johann Jakob Haub. After Johann Haub died in 1848, Katharina sent her daughters to England where conditions were considered safer. They sailed from Frankfurt along the Rhine to Rotterdam, and then by steam packet to Hull, where they joined a musical group to earn a living. Another of the players was Friederick Geisler. Katherina Haub and her sons also went to England.

Johann Friedrich Geisler, a widower from Alpenrod, wed 25th October 1855 in Bethesda Chapel, Kingston-upon-Hull to Anna Juliana Haub
They left from Liverpool on 1st December on board the "Columbia" with other members of Anna Juliana's family, including her mother, Katharina. The group reached Melbourne on Wednesday, 18th March 1857 and made its way to Ballarat.

The Columbia was reported as a ship of 1291 tons, M Clark the Master, with 198 Steerage passengers, and Cabin passengers two Misses Browen, Capt Langley, Mr Gartside and Dr Whitenbury
On the same day port officials welcomed passengers from the Sardinian, ship 1045 tons from Liverpool 22 Nov arrived with 232 passengers, the Governor General from Sydney with 64, and the Lady Bird from Portland with 23 in the steerage and 7 named passengers - a 'normal day' at Port Melbourne

Hi Elizabeth,
It appears that you have the correct names, unfortunately it is the wrong Johann Jakob Geissler.
J.J. Geissler wed 23 May 1882 (Registration 2426) to Margaret Tainsh, at MaKay's Bridge Kotupna Vic, with John being 20 years Margaret's senior.
J.J. was born on 31 Dec 1842 at Ins, Berne, Switzerland, his parents were Johann Geissler and Barbara Feuri and he was Christened 15 Jan 1843, Ins, Berne Switzerland.
He came out on a "White Star" clipper called "Red Jacket" in 1861, this ship sailed from England. He possibly 'worked his passage'. There were no German connections with this Geissler family at all.
He died 22 Jan 1897 aged almost 55, at Mooroopna Vic and was buried at Mooroopna Cemetery .
The parents of Margaret Tainsh were William Tainsh and Sarah Armstrong. Margaret was born on 13 June 1862 at Scarsdale, Vic and died at Richmond Victoria 18 April 1937 # 3742
I hope this is of some help to you and that I haven't "put a spanner in the works" Please let me know if I can be of further help.
You have a fabulous site, Lorraine
