Dear Elizabeth, I stumbled across your website today & found the names of my ggg grandparents on it. Their names were George Ford & Ann Coram.
George was a tin miner from Cornwall. I would be interested to know how you got the information about where they lived in Melbourne etc. My understanding of their lives is, that they came to Australia on the Sir Robert Sale in 1852. They were on the goldfields in 1853 where my gg grandfather George Henry Ford was born. He was born at Forest Creek, Steel's Gully (near Castlemaine).
After that the details are a bit sketchy but I do know they went to Qld by 1865 where they had a daughter Clara (born & died in 1865)
My gg grandfather George Henry got married in Emerald, Qld in 1880 to Sarah Ann Urwin. They moved to Glen Innes, NSW where they had 11 children. George Henry Ford was buried in Warwick cemetery in Qld in 1925.
I am wondering if there has been some kind of mix up with the details, or if the time my ggg grandparents lived in Melbourne was between 1853 & 1865 only. I would be very interested to hear from you & am happy to share what information I know about these people. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate it & all of the hard work that goes into keeping family history in order.
Mary Toscano
As you can see, the Assisted Immigration list contains details from two different passenger lists of people surnamed Ford, came July 1852 on the Sir Robert Sale
with Thomas 32, George 28, Ann 27 and Sarah 24
Then checking the Vic BMD index, I have already listed Ann and George's family above, purchasing a birth cert would show you which of the children - John 4, William 3, Mary 2, Samuel and Robert - he is listed once, so I think it is likely he was born during the voyage, so probably goes with Mary and John to the older mother, Ann, while William and Samuel go to Sarah.
May be our George
George Ford wed ELIZABETH HODGE on 16 NOV 1827 at Lostwithiel, Cornwall, England

I have sourced my information from www.freecen.org.uk/ with regard to the 1841 Census as it is complete for Cornwall.
From what I have been able to track down, George for was probably born in Breag, Cornwall in abt 1827. I found a family that looks very much like it could be him, on the free census website in 1841 living on Penhale Common, Kerrier, Cornwall. George seemed to be the eldest of 9 children. George born abt 1827, Thomas abt 1828, Robert abt 1829, Cyrus abt 1836, Edwin abt 1837, Ellen 1839, Emma 1841, Gabriel 1843 & Henry 1850. The parents were listed as George Ford (born abt 1806) & Elizabeth (born abt 1806). I haven't tracked down a maiden name for her yet. Since the free census website has 100% of records transcribed for 1841 in Cornwall, I am pretty sure this family is my family.
Apparently the Penhale area was a lead mining area but the mine closed down. Another company, Golden Wheal, bought out the mine but by that time George had married & may have moved to Devon. George's father George 1806 was listed as a tin miner in the 1841 census. I do know that George Junior was from a mining family. He came to Australia to see if they could make their fortune on the gold fields. There is no evidence that they did.
I managed to find Ann Coram in Cornwall too. She was born about 1827 in Callington, Cornwall. Her mother Grace was a widow in the 1841 census & lived with Ann & a younger daughter Mary in Fore St, Callington, Cornwall with others as well. Grace seems to have been the oldest member of the household. Grace worked as an agricultural labourer in the 1841 census.
George's youngest brother Henry was born in Callington in 1850. Gabriel the next youngest brother was born in 1843 in Breag. The Ford family must have moved in between 1843 - 1846 to Callington, where Ann was living, since George & Ann married in 1846. In the 1851 census George Ford 1806 was still listed as a miner & the children apart from George junior & Robert were still living at home.
I have no idea why George & Ann would marry in Devon when both their families lived in Callington. I do know that Grace Coram died in Callington, Cornwall in 1848. Mary Coram was a domestic servant to a school master's wife in the 1851 census.
