Flemington, in Melbourne, is the best-known racecourse in Australia. It is the oldest continuing metropolitan racecourse there have been races here every year since 1840. It is the most significant racing heritage site in the country. The first race meeting held here was on the rough river flats beside the Maribyrnong River in March 1840 when Melbourne as a town was barely five years old.
Flemington was a local name applied to a nearby township and hotel, probably deriving from an early settler or squatter, Robert Fleming, and his family.
Another version of the story, from The Horse's Mouth
Melbourne's first official race meeting was held in March in 1838, at a place called Batman's Hill, which is where Spencer Street Station is today. Two years later, in 1840, the Port Phillip Turf Club conducted thoroughbred racing events at Saltwater Flats. A track was marked out across the river flat using posts, and the jockeys had to make sure their horses ran around the outside of each one. This was the very beginning of Flemington Racecourse.
The name 'Flemington' was not used until the 1850s. It is believed that a man named Robert Fleming sailed down the Saltwater River (now the Maribyrnong) and stopped and built a house on the land that is now the racecourse. He and his wife had a family of four children and their livelihood was farming cattle and sheep.
As time went on, the property became known as Fleming Town. The Flemings granted permission to Melbourne's racing administrators to conduct race meetings on their land and this is how the name 'Flemington' came about.
The land was owned by farmer / butcher Robert Fleming and his wife, and subsequently became known as Fleming Town. He established a butchery on the site later taken by the racecourse. A butchery beside the Saltwater (Maribyrnong) River would have been in keeping with the river's later use for noxious outfalls. Today the site of Flemington racecourse covers 127 hectares and belongs to Crown land.

George and Jane Fletcher

From on Tuesday, 24 January 2012 Hi
Your site has a family line starting with James Woodmason
You say that William Woodmason (1831 - 1892) married Jemima Fletcher (1837 - 1905), who was the daughter of Jane Walker and George Fletcher.
I am researching this Fletcher family. Do you have any more information on them? Thanks, Joel Fetter
Thankyou for asking. Assisted British Immigration. The first reference I found is a death - who appears to be a brother of Jemima, also 3 sisters.
These details led to the following reconstruction.
Using FamilySearch I found
Jemima Shipp wed 24 Nov 1805 to Matthew Fletchir at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England
George Fletcher Birth: 13 May 1808, Christening: 12 Jun 1808 son of Jemima Ship and Matthew Fletcher, at Bray, Berkshire, England
The UK Census 1841 lists the family living in St Pancreas, Middlesex.
George Fletcher 33, Jane Fletcher 29, Ann Fletcher 5, Jemima Fletcher 3 and Elizabeth Fletcher 1.
The 1851 Census has the same parents, more aged than expected - George Fletcher 47, Jane Fletcher 40, Emily Fletcher 9, George Fletcher 11 and William Fletcher 3.
At a different address is the household of Charles Blankley, the 7th person listed is Gemeima Fletcher aged 14, servant.
