Joshua Dunstan

From Hello Elizabeth
I was both amazed and fascinated to find your website, especially finding reference to Joshua Dunstan. I am tracing my family tree and I am certain this Joshua who came to Ballarat in 1851 is related. I am sure he had a brother in Cornwall named Caleb who also came out to the Ballarat / Coburg area two years earlier than Joshua in 1848 on the ship Nelson. He came with his wife Mary Jane Goodman. Caleb died aged 72 in 1896 in Coburg. On Calebs death certificate are his parents details; William Dunstan and Sarah De Comage, both of Cornwall. I note your spelling as Sarah De Courage. Caleb (Joshua's brother) had a Son Caleb (jnr) who moved to Western Australia and started my Dunstan line here in the West.
Where did you get the details of Joshua? because I am having difficulty reconciling some of the zigsaw puzzle. I would like to know more about Joshua and Caleb and get more information about William and Sara De Courage (De Comage) who lived in Cornwall.
Any help or direction you provide will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Kingsley Dunstan
I replied
Hi,
I got the information on Joshua's parents from the Victorian death index
DUNSTAN Joshua D Wm Sarah DE COURAGE aged 57 died at COBURG 1882 ref 974
and also for Ann
DUNSTAN Ann D Spargo James Mary Ann SPARGO aged 48 born in CORNWALL 1879 ref 4206
In 1880 Victoria started indexing Place of Death instead of putting the 'Place of Birth' answered in the index
Looking at Shipping to 1851 I did not find Joshua in the Assisted lists
but did find listed twice because the index is a combination of two lists .

Peter Dunstan

From a Gen Forum by Mignon Court, dated 2001, Peter and Julianna or Anna Dunstone of Belotha Cornwall, had Peter Dunstan born 21 Feb 1830 and William born 17 April 1831 and John Dunstan born at Kea, Cornwall about 06 November 1836. Peter Dunstan married Phillipa Olive and went to Australia. William and John both went to Canada, but I think John returned to manage the property
Phil Grainger wrote on July 24, 2004 are searching for any information on Peter Dunstan (1830-1915) b. Cornwall, and Phillippa Dunstan nee Olive (1829-1896) b. Truro Cornwall, both died Ballarat, Victoria AUST. and any descendents. Children: John, Ann, Juliana, William John, Edward, Emily, Anna Olive (m Tregurtha), Emma Gay (m Carah)

Hello Elizabeth,
Please do a page on Peter and Phillippa Dunstan, and feel free to refer any enquires our way. I have the same information on their children, except for their son William's death.
I have a copy of a marriage certificate for Peter and Phillippa, it shows only the fathers names, Peter's dad is also a Peter Dunstan. Phillippa died 23 November 1896 and is buried at Ballarat New Cemetery.
I'm happy to have my details appear against Phillippa and Peter, as a contact, but my very wise and wonderful husband does not want our main e-mail address to appear on the web page as spammers tend to search all web pages on the Internet looking for e-mail addresses. They create programs for this purpose. They can sell e-mail addresses that are actually read by a person for more money than the system addresses like administrator, etc...
He has set up an e-mail address to use for this. We would prefer it to appear something like our_lot(AT)tpg.com.au

Letter 1

Edward Olive and Honor had 9 children (that I know of). Two of their daughters were Phillippa Olive and Honor James Olive.
Phillippa Olive wed 14 August 1851 to Peter Dunstan at Kea, Cornwall. Peter is referred to as a Engineer in Australia.
Phillippa (1829-1896) and Peter (1830-1915) had 8 Children, the last 5 births registered at Ballarat, Victoria
1. John (1852- ?)
2. Ann (1854-1902) never married, buried at Ballarat New Cemetery, Victoria, with her parents.
3. Julianna (1857-1913) buried at Kiewa Cemetery, Victoria, with her husband, (and 1st cousin) Samuel Dunstan, they had 4 Children.
4. William John (1861-1949) buried at Melbourne Cemetery, Victoria, 5 Children.
5. Edward (1863-?)
6. Emily (1867-) Never Married, buried at Preston Cemetery, Victoria.
7. Anna Olive Tregurtha (1868 -1932) buried at Ballarat Cemetery, Victoria, with her husband Charles. 1 Child (so far).
8. Emma Gay Carah (1871-1948) buried at Fawkner Cemetery, Victoria, she and her husband John had 4 Children.

I have the passenger list details for Peter on the Merlin, and for Phillippa with John, Ann and Julianna on the Monarch. I have been trying to trace forward all of their descendants, with mixed success, only living relative so far a grandson of Julianna and Samuel Dunstan, Ernie Pope, here in Victoria, and his children.
I also found a listing in the Cornwall Census of 1841 taken at Bolatha, Kea, a Peter Dunstan, aged 45, is listed along with his wife Juliana Dunstan, aged 40, and their children:
Peter Dunstan, aged 10,
William Dunstan, aged 9,
John Dunstan, aged 4,
I believe that their son Peter (aged 10 in the Census) is the individual that married Phillippa Olive and immigrated to Australia.

There is an element of certainity with the IGI concerning Phillippa Olive, but none concerning Peter Dunstan They show
Philipia Olive Birth: 26 Dec 1829 Christening: 28 Feb 1830 Saint Marys-Wesleyan, Truro, Cornwall, England Father: Edward Olive Mother: Honor
Peter Dunstan Birth: < 1831> Quenchwell, Cornwall, England
Marriages: Phillippa < 1856> Quenchwell, Cornwall, England
I looked at the 1851 Census as it was available, and found Peter aged 20, living as a Lodger, an Engineer born at St Blazey, CON (which I assume is Cornwall). He was living at 7 Taylor's Square, Tavistock, Devonshire.

Honor James Olive died as Honor James Dunstan died Jul-Sep 1886 aged 69 in district of Truro Vol 5c Page 99, giving a birth year of 1817. She was the wife of Stephen Dunstan

Peter Dunstan 21 Feb 1830 - aged , wed 14 August 1851 at Kea, Cornwall to Phillippa Olive and after Ann was born the family decided to go to Victoria, Australia. Peter travelled first. The Merlin of 1030 tons with Master Barlase left Liverpool on 31 July 1856 and took 140 days to reach Victoria, arrived Nov 1856 with Peter Dunstan aged 26 listed as a Miner. Passengers paid 33 pounds each for the journey.
After Juliana was born Apr-Jun 1857 then Phillippa planned and made the voyage to join him.
The Monarch with Master J W Gill, left Sept 1859 to land at Port Phillip in Nov 1859 with Phillipa Dunstan 29, John Dunstan 7, Ann Dunstan 4, and infant Julian Dunstan

Hi Elizabeth My great great grandparents are Peter and Phillipa Dunstan. My great grandfather was Edward Dunstan, son of Peter and Phillipa, who died in Adelaide on 21.3.1939. He married Maria Josephine Bennett in Ballarat on 11.2.1888, and they had six children - Leslie Edward Dunstan (1888 - 1968), my grandfather, Mabel Fearn Dunstan (1892 - 1937), Philip Percy Dunstan (1896 - 1918), Hazel Gay Dunstan (1900 - 1961), Myrtle Alice Dunstan (1903 - 197?), Hilda Irene Pearl Dunstan (1909 - 2002).
My grandfather had two daughters, Lorna Deborah Dunstan (1917 - 1983) and June Lesley Dunstan (1922 - 2003) (my mother). My grandfather's sister, Hazel had two children, Brian (1933 - ) and Mignon (1938 - )
Edward Dunstan moved the family to Albany, Western Australia and then absconded with all the money from their farm which he had sold. My grandfather and Philip Percy Dunstan went to World War 1. My grandfather survived but Philip died in June 1918 in France. My great grandmother lived in Perth until 1922, and then left to go back to Ballarat with the 4 daughters. She died in Ballarat 2 years later from colon cancer. My grandfather and grandmother lived in Perth all their lives and I too was born and bred in Perth.
