Eliza
I am related to the Ditchburns and have a lot of information on them. You are actually starting late on them, as there were two Ditchburn emigrations before 1870.
The first of the Ditchburns to emigrate was John Ditchburn. He emigrated on the SS Glen Huntly to Port Philip in 1850 and married Eliza Crowdy in Melbourne in 1854. They had three children, John, b Collingwood, Victoria, in 1854; Elizabeth, b Ballarat East, Victoria in 1859; and Frank Oscar, b Ballarat West, Victoria, in 1862.
John Ditchburn was the eldest son of William Ditchburn (1803-1876) and his first wife Elizabeth Paxton. William was born in 1803 in Rennington, Northumberland, and was the brother of the Thomas Ditchburn (1816-1900) who married Ann Beal, and whose sons Peter and George emigrated in 1870. Thomas and Ann, however, stayed behind in the UK with their other children.
After John, the next emigrant was his father, William, who emigrated on the SS Champion of the Seas leaving Liverpool on 11 October 1854 and arriving Melbourne on 26 December 1854. William took with him his second wife, Ann nee Dodds, and children Robert (plus his new wife Jane), William and Elizabeth, the remaining surviving children of his first marriage, and Isabella, the daughter of his second marriage to Ann Dodds. Robert and William both had families in Australia, and both died in Ballarat.
Then came Peter and George, the sons of Thomas Ditchburn and Ann Beal, in 1870. For the record, the two brothers, William and Thomas Ditchburn, were the children of John Ditchburn (1778-1862) and Ann Willis (1782-1860). My connection is that William Ditchburn’s sister, Sarah Ditchburn, married Ann Dodds’ brother, Thomas Dodds, and Thomas and Sarah Dodds are my gggrandparents.
