Margaret Dupe born in Somerset

Margaret Dupe c1842 wed 1861 #3583 to Werner Cathrey
From on Friday, 6 February, 2009
Hello, Researching Family History and see that Werner Cathrey married Margaret Dupe. He had been married before and my husband is a descendant of his first marriage to Jane Janette. They had lived in London. He came from British Guiana. Do you have any more info. on his family? I found that his father had had a post as Protector of Indians there.
Best regards,Sue Lassen.

177 Ibid, 22 August, 1861 — Page 9, Col. A. Before Mr Justice Hill...
Richard Austwick Westbrook, a solicitor, surrendered to take his trial upon coroner's inquisition, for the manslaughter of Jane Janet Cathrey.
In this case it will be remembered that the prisoner has all along asserted that the fatal occurrence was the result of accident and the grand jury ignored the bill for manslaughter that was presented to them.
Mr Orridge, who appeared for the prosecution, said that the charge against the prisoner was undoubtedly one of a very peculiar character, and that in light of the decision that had been arrived at by the grand jury, he did not think himself called upon to offer any evidence to support the coroner's inquisition.
The jury consequently, under his Lordship's direction, returned a verdict of not guilty.

From on Wednesday, 23 September, 2009
I would be very interested in anything for Werner and his offspring, but the Cattermole/Flowerdew lines are quite remote from mine. However (sorry Elizabeth) Werner's second wife Margaret Dupe/Dufrey is not the issue of John Herbert Dupe and Susan Berry. The latter were esconced in Tasmania, and there is no record of a birth of a daughter Margaret. In addition, Werner, whose reputation was already somewhat tarnished by the circumstances of his previous marriage, would have been mindful of his public persona, rising, as it were, to an elevated status in Victoria. There was still, in Victoria, public sensitivity to convict heritage.
Werner was cohabiting with Margaret Dupe in England in 1851:
In 1851 he is living at South Place Red Cliff Bristol, 35, Western Rail clerk with Margaret 28 born Somerset, listed as his wife. In fact at that time they were cohabiting, marrying in Australia a decade later.
Margaret was born 1828, and thus could not have been the offspring of John and Susan, John being born 1815.
Although the father of Margaret was indeed a John Dufrey/Dupe, Margaret's mother was one Margaret O'Hara.
Clearly I need to do some investigative work here (haven't yet found the death records of Margaret, though she died 16 Apr 1892 Hawthorn Victoria, nor do I yet have the shipping records). Irritatingly, there appears to have been no death notice in Victorian newspapers for Margaret, though of course she and Werner had no issue or family in Oz.
Both are buried Boroondara Cemetery Kew Church of England grave C0096.
Kind regards, Lorraine.
